Andreeva remains the world's highest-ranked teenager after a swashbuckling 2025 season that peaked with back-to-back WTA 1000 titles in Dubai and Indian Wells, with the 18-year-old rising to a career-high ranking of World No. 5. Andreeva's momentum stalled midway through the season and the Russian only picked up four wins from Montreal to the end of the year, also picking up an ankle injury that contributed to her ultimately failing to qualify for the WTA Finals in singles. Meanwhile, Joint propelled herself from outside the world's top 100 and into a current Australian Open seeding position, claiming two WTA titles and establishing herself on the main tour.
However, Joint has repeatedly come up short against the game's elite and that's why it's tough to have much faith in her for this clash. The 19-year-old is yet to win a single match against a top 10 opponent, let alone a match. Andreeva certainly isn't operating at her best right now, but you get the feeling she's not far away and this looks like it could be a favourable matchup for her - I don't think Joint has the firepower or weapons to really force her into uncomfortable positions. Joint began last season outside the world’s top 100, but the Australian teenager’s rapid rise saw her produce a breakout campaign that now has her seeded for the upcoming Australian Open.
The 19-year-old captured two WTA titles in 2025 - lifting trophies on the clay in Rabat and the grass in Eastbourne - and added further depth to her season with four additional quarter-final appearances.
Her 2026 campaign did not start smoothly. A bout of flu disrupted her preparation, and she was comprehensively beaten in straight sets by Iga Swiatek and Barbora Krejčiková during the United Cup.
Joint steadied in Adelaide, opening her season proper with a hard-fought 7-6, 6-4 win over former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin, recovering from a 1-4 deficit in the second set to close out the match.
Joint advanced into her first quarter-final of 2026 after compatriot Ajla Tomljanovic retired after just two games of their second round encounter on Wednesday.
