However, I'm backing Andreeva to flip the script and avenge that loss in Singapore.

It has already been a memorable season for Andreeva, with the 19-year-old making her long-awaited Grand Slam breakthrough by capturing her maiden major title at Roland Garros.

The French Open triumph was the highlight of a dominant clay-court swing in which Andreeva compiled an outstanding 22-3 record. She also lifted the title in Linz, finished runner-up in Madrid, reached the semi-finals in Stuttgart and made the quarter-finals in Rome during an extended run of consistency on the surface.

Andreeva remained a threat during the North American hardcourt swing, going 7-3 and advancing to the US Open quarter-finals. Her campaign ended in heartbreaking fashion against Coco Gauff, with Andreeva unable to convert two match points before eventually falling 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-2.

The Russian got her Singapore Open campaign off to a blistering start, dropping just four games in sweeping past Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-2 6-2, winning 72 per cent of points behind her first serve.

It's been a disappointing season overall for Fernandez, with the Canadian at risk of finishing the year outside the top 50.

That makes the Asian swing particularly important, with Fernandez defending significant ranking points over the coming month after winning the Osaka title and reaching the Hong Kong semi-finals at this stage last season. Her hardcourt results have lacked consistency in 2026, failing to win back-to-back matches in 10 of her 12 tournaments on the surface before arriving in Singapore.

There were some encouraging signs during the recent North American hardcourt swing, with Fernandez reaching the Round of 16 in Toronto and third round of the US Open before falling to Naomi Osaka and Jessica Pegula respectively.

Fernandez was made to work hard in her Singapore opener, but ultimately delivered when it mattered to defeat qualifier Kyoka Okamura 6-2, 6-3. The Canadian then benefitted from a horror showing from Alycia Parks in the second round, with the American imploding with 41 unforced errors in two sets. Fernandez needed only six winners to advance into the quarter-finals by a 6-4 6-3 score.
