Joint, overcoming a slow start due to flu, aims to gain momentum, while Tomljanovic, despite past injuries, remains a formidable opponent. Historically, Tomljanovic leads their head-to-head encounters, and with her strong start this season, she's poised to edge out Joint. Maya Joint vs Ajla Tomljanovic Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

It's an all-Australian showdown for a place in the Adelaide International quarter-finals as teenager Maya Joint and veteran Ajla Tomljanovic square off on Wednesday night at Memorial Drive.

These two players are at opposite stages of their careers, but very evenly matched, so this is looming as a cracking contest under the lights in Adelaide. Joint experienced a tough start to her season after being struck down by a nasty case of the flu, but she's got off the mark in Adelaide and will be hoping to build some more momentum before the Australian Open, where she will be seeded at a major for the first time. Meanwhile, Tomljanovic has endured her fair share of injury setback over the last few years, but at her best, she's easily a top 30 talent and someone capable of beating the very best in the sport.

Tomljanovic has won both completed previous encounters between the pair and I'm backing the 32-year-old as the slight underdog here. Tomljanovic has a superb record against fellow Australians and she's started the year playing some great tennis, pushing the in-form Karolina Muchova all the way in Brisbane last week. Joint, understandably, hasn't been near her best level so far this season, so I'm taking the Overs and Tomljanovic to edge it.
  • Tomljanovic has a 15-6 record vs fellow Australians throughout her career
  • Joint has lost three of her last four matches
  • The last meeting between the pair featured Over 21.5 games
  • Joint's last match in Adelaide featured Over 21.5 games
  • Tomljanovic has seen Over 21.5 games in six of her last nine completed matches

Joint vs Tomljanovic Head To Head

These two Aussies squared off in three occasions in 2025, with Tomljanovic enjoying a 2-1 edge and Joint's only win coming via retirement in Rabat, where she went on to win the title.

Maya Joint Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 1-2
  • 2025 Record: 33-21
  • WTA Adelaide Record: 1-0
  • Current Ranking: No. 32
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 32

Joint was ranked outside the top 100 this time last year, but the Aussie teenager put together a whirlwind season and will now be seeded at the upcoming Australian Open.

The 19-year-old won two WTA titles on the clay of Rabat and grass of Eastbourne, along with making another four further quarter-finals last year.

It wasn't the ideal start to 2026 for Joint as she was struck down with the flu and subsequently blown off the court in straight set demolitions from Iga Swiatek and Barbora Krejickova in the United Cup.

However, Joint opened her account for 2026 in her Adelaide opener with a 7-6 6-4 victory over former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin, coming back from 1-4 in the second set.

Ajla Tomljanovic Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 2-1
  • 2025 Record: 17-22
  • WTA Adelaide Record: 3-3
  • Current Ranking: No. 76
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 32 (2023)

Tomljanovic's career was peaking after reaching back-to-back Grand Slam quarter-finals at Wimbledon and the US Open in 2022, but more injuries struck and she ended up missing three slams in 2023.

Ever since, the 32-year-old has been trying to regain full fitness and her best tennis - but it's proving a struggle.

The Aussie managed just three quarter-finals in 2025 and slipped down to No. 76 in the rankings.

Tomljanovic however is looking in good form to start 2026, beating Elsa Jacquemot in Brisbane before falling to Karolina Muchova in a deciding set tiebreak, while she was leading Clara Tauson by a set before the Dane retired in their Adelaide first round.
