Jones is swiftly rising up the rankings and is looking like a genuine star of the future, while Kasatkina is aiming to return to the Adelaide quarter-finals after finishing runner-up at the tournament last season.

The Russian excelled in WTA 500 tournaments, which is the primary reason her ranking is where it is. Indeed, Kasatkina made the final in a staggering six 500-level events, winning the title in Eastbourne and Ningbo, while also finishing runner-up in Adelaide - where she received two walkovers on her way to the final.

Kasatkina defeated Peyton Stearns before going down to eventual finalist Polina Kudermetova to start her season in Brisbane last week, while she eased past another Aussie in Olivia Gadecki 6-2 6-3 to begin her Adelaide campaign earlier this week.

Born on the Gold Coast and the first Australian junior to reach the World No. 1 ranking since Jelena Dokic in 1998, there's a fair bit of hype surrounding 16-year-old Emerson Jones - and it's easy to see why.

Jones had never faced a player ranked higher than 550 ahead of her Adelaide opener against World No. 37 Wang Xinyu, but she produced a stunning performance to emerge a 6-4 6-0 victor in just an hour and 12 minutes.

Currently ranked No. 371, Jones has received a wildcard for next week's Australian Open after reaching the final of the junior event in 2024, along with also finishing runner-up at junior Wimbledon.

Jones was ultra-impressive in her Adelaide opener, but asking her to repeat that performance against a top 10 player is a big ask.

I think Jones can keep one set competitive, which can push this match over 19.5 total games, but Kasatkina excels in these WTA 500 tournaments and swiftly brushed aside another Aussie in Gadecki in the first round. Kasatkina to prevail in straight sets is the most likely outcome here.
