It's shaping as another electric atmosphere in Dubai on Thursday night as Alexandra Eala and World No. 4 Coco Gauff collide in the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 tournament.

Eala has been lighting up Dubai over the last couple of nights, firstly taking her third top 10 scalp over Jasmine Paolini before ending the seven-match winning streak of Sorana Cirstea to secure her place in a second WTA 1000 quarter-final. The 20-year-old continues to command extraordinary crowd support everywhere she plays from the strong Filipino contingents around the world and they will no doubt be out in force once again in Dubai on Thursday night. Meanwhile, Gauff is still searching for her best tennis after being forced to save three match points against Elise Mertens in the previous round.

Gauff was previously 4-0 against Mertens, so the fact she was troubled so much in a matchup she usually dominates is a bit concerning for the American. With this in mind, I'm backing a lengthy match here with Over 20.5 total games. Eala has a great record against the top 10 (3-2), with the last four such matches seeing 20+ games. I'm also keen to back Over 7.5 breaks of serve. For how good these two are, they have two of the weakest serves in the top 50 and Gauff has seen 10+ breaks in her last two Dubai outings this week. The American loves to scrap and offers some value to prevail in three.

It hasn't been an ideal start to the season for Gauff.

The American was upset by Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the United Cup to launch the year, while she suffered a crushing straight sets loss to Elina Svitolina in the Australian Open quarter-finals.

Returning to action in Doha last week, Gauff suffered a 6-4 6-2 defeat in her opening match against World No. 57 Elisabetta Cocciaretto.

Gauff has been far from her best in Dubai, but she's fought her way into the last eight for the fourth time, defeating Anna Kalinskaya 6-4 6-4 before saving three match points and coming from a set down to edge out Elise Mertens 2-6 7-6(9) 6-3.

“The whole match felt like it wasn’t going my way,” Gauff said post-match. “It wasn’t the best, but I just tried to stay in it, and I did fight for every point. I’m happy I was able to get the result today."

Eala had her breakthrough moment at WTA 1000 level when she beat Iga Swiatek and Madison Keys to reach the Miami semi-finals last year and she's once again playing some of her best tennis at this level.

After a quarter-final run in Abu Dhabi to begin her Middle East swing, Eala has raised her level in Dubai, not dropping a single set on her way to the quarter-finals.

The 20-year-old benefitted from a first round retirement by Hailey Baptiste before conquering Jasmine Paolini 6-1 7-6 for her third top 10 victory.

Eala backed it up with an impressive 7-5 6-4 triumph over the in-form Sorana Cirstea, who was fresh of winning the title in Cluj and had only lost to multiple time major champions in 2026.

“Every round is such a battle and so filled with tension,” Eala said post-match, hinting at the immense crowd support she's been receiving.

“So I’m really happy with how I performed, and I’m really happy to be able to share it with all of you."
