Spain vs Austria World Cup Tips, Prediction & Live Stream - La Roja set for the R16

Spain face Austria at the World Cup with defensive momentum and a Round of 16 spot in sight. Spain remain unbeaten and have not conceded a single goal at the tournament, while their attacking weapon Mikel Oyarzabal is in great form. Austria, playing their first World Cup knockout game since 1954, lack the firepower to trouble a robust Spanish defense. With Spain's disciplined form and Austria's late entry via a dramatic draw, a Spanish win to nil looks likely. Fans can live stream the match on bet365, subject to restrictions.

Spain vs Austria World Cup Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Spain will be looking for another defensive masterclass as they target the R16 at the World Cup when they meet Austria at SoFi Stadium on Thursday.

Solid without being spectacular would sum up Spain's World Cup campaign so far, but tournament football is all about building into the competition and not peaking too early, so you could say the 2010 champions are perfectly positioned heading into the knockout phase.

La Roja have yet to concede a goal at this World Cup, part of a sustained strong defence that has seen them concede six shots or less across their last five games at this competition. With only two goals leaked during qualifying, it's going to take a special performance to break open this Spanish side and I don't think Austria have it in them.

Appearing in their first World Cup knockout match since 1954, Austria survived a controversial game with Algeria to make it this far, but this probably spells the end of their journey in North America.

Austria don't have the attacking firepower to really trouble Spain on current form, so a win to nil for La Roja appeals here. Marcel Sabitzer is one man who could make an impact for Das Team and is backed for a shot on target, while Spain striker Mikel Oyarzabal remains in prolific form up front.
  • Spain are unbeaten in their last 34 games (excluding penalties)
  • Spain have won nine of their last 13 games
  • Spain have yet to concede a goal at this World Cup & only leaked two in qualifying
  • Mikel Oyarzabal has 15 goals & seven assists in his last 15 starts for Spain
  • Marcel Sabitzer has scored four goals in his last six games for Austria & had three shots vs Argentina in the group stage - he's the most likely for Das Team
  • Spain have scored 3+ goals in five of their last six wins - however, it's not quite clicking in attack at the moment, so a 2-0 correct score appeals

Spain vs Austria Head To Head

Spain have won four of the last five meetings, scoring nine goals in the last two - however, Austria won their only previous World Cup encounter 2-1 back in 1978.

Spain Form Analysis

Safe to say Spain haven't hit anywhere near top gear yet, but they haven't needed to after topping their group comfortably.

It was a shaky start for La Roja as they played out a 0-0 stalemate with Cape Verde, but they bounced back strongly with a dominant 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia.

Luis De la Fuente's team then knocked Uruguay out of the World Cup, holding on with some strong defence in a 1-0 victory in the final group game, meaning they are yet to conceded at this tournament.

Additionally, Spain are yet to concede a first half shot on target, illustrating that it's going to take a big attacking display for a team to upstage them at this World Cup.

Spain Team News

Oyarzabal has contributed to three of Spain's five goals at this tournament and will start up front again, with Lamine Yamal and Alex Baena - who scored against Uruguay - also featuring.

Some injury concerns though, with Yeremy Pino (shoulder), Nico Williams (adductor) and Victor Munoz (thigh) all in doubt here.

Mikel Merino got a start against Uruguay, but the likes of Fabian Ruiz, Dani Olmo or Gavi could replace him for this one.

Austria Form Analysis

Austria secured their spot in a first World Cup knockout stage since 1954 in thrilling and very controversial circumstances.

After edging out Jordan and losing to nil against Argentina, Austria seemed to be cruising to a draw against Algeria, which would have suited both teams.

However, Algeria suddenly went in front in stoppage time, leaving Austria on the brink of elimination before Sasa Kalajdzic headed home the equaliser in the 96th minute to secure a 3-3 draw and this R32 showdown with Spain.

None of Spain's last nine games have seen a goal after 75 minutes, so Austria will likely need to strike early if they are any chance at the upset here.

Austria Team News

Marko Arnautovic and David Alaba picked up knocks against Algeria, but are no concern to miss this clash.

No other injury worries for Ralf Rangnick.
