Argentina aim to continue their pursuit of back-to-back World Cup trophies as they face Egypt in the Round of 16. While Argentina remain unbeaten, questions linger over their form, with recent narrow escapes highlighting a reliance on Messi. Egypt, fresh off a historic knockout stage win and inspired by Salah, arrive as underdogs but could pose a threat. The analysis suggests both teams are likely to score, but Argentina’s experience and Messi's brilliance are tipped to make the difference. Live streaming is available via bet365.

Argentina vs Egypt World Cup Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Argentina continue their bid for consecutive World Cup trophies when they come up against Egypt in the Round of 16 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Tuesday.

It's hard to know if Argentina are playing good football or not. They had a straightforward group and the knockout bracket has broken kindly for them.

My hunch at this stage is that they're there for the taking. Cape Verde fired off 16 shots and forced extra-time against the defending champions, only succumbing via an own goal in the 111th minute. I get the feeling Argentina are over-reliant on Lionel Messi and they might struggle when they eventually face a half-decent side at this World Cup.

Fortunately for Argentina, they have another chance to play themselves into some form, with Egypt not particularly threatening. The Pharaohs have only won one match at this World Cup and that was against the lowest-ranked team in New Zealand, while their R32 clash with Australia was a dire affair that was ultimately decided on penalties.

Any team with Mo Salah is a chance and with Argentina conceding two goals to Cape Verde, I think the Egyptians can find the back of the net, but the defending winners should do just about enough to get over the line, with Messi likely proving the difference again.
  • Argentina are unbeaten in their last 11 games, winning 10
  • Argentina have conceded in their last two games vs Cape Verde & Jordan
  • Egypt have seen BTTS land in all four of their World Cup games
  • Egypt have won just three of their last 10 games in normal time
  • Egypt have scored in six of their last seven games
  • Lionel Messi has scored in all four of his World Cup games for a total of seven, while he also has nine goals & seven assists in his last 10 games for club and country
  • Mo Salah has registered 1+ shots on target in eight of his last 10 competitive games for Egypt
  • Argentina has won by a 2+ goal margin in six of their last seven games

Argentina vs Egypt Head To Head

Argentina won the only previous meeting 2-0 in a 2008 friendly. Argentina have won eight straight World Cup games over African opposition, while Egypt have lost 12 of their 16 previous meetings with South American teams.

Argentina Form Analysis

Argentina couldn't have asked for a better start to their World Cup trophy defence.

Landing in favourable group, Argentina beat Algeria and Austria without conceding a goal before another comfortable victory over Jordan with a rotated side.

Again, landing in a nice section of the knockout bracket, Argentina faced an unexpected challenge by Cape Verde in the Round of 32, twice being pegged back by the African nation to go into extra-time, which they only won via an own goal.

Argentina are looking to become the first team since 1962 to win back-to-back World Cups and as mentioned, the draw has opened up for them, with either Colombia or Switzerland waiting in the quarter-finals and one of England or Norway to be waiting in the semis.

Argentina Team News

Messi is the first man to score seven goals at two separate World Cups and he will once again lead the line here.

Nahuel Molina, Enzo Fernandez and Facundo Medina picked up knocks against Cape Verde, but all are expected to be fit for selection in this one.

Egypt Form Analysis

Egypt have made history at this World Cup, winning a knockout match for the first time and advancing into the R16.

However, Hossam Hassan’s side have only registered one win at the tournament and that was against minnows New Zealand either side of draws against Belgium and Iran.

It wasn't pretty, but Egypt managed to sneak past Australia on penalties in the R16, with Mo Salah scoring a cheeky panenka in the shootout.

Egypt are now aiming to become just the fifth African country to make the World Cup quarter-finals.

Egypt Team News

Midfielder Emam Ashour scored against the Socceroos and should retain his spot in midfield, with star attackers Salah and Omar Marmoush also featuring.

Some concerns at the back, with Mohamed Abdelmonem and Ahmed Fatouh in doubt.
