Barcelona are backed for a third consecutive La Liga title, while former Europa League powerhouses Sevilla could find themselves in another relegation battle. Kylian Mbappe is the deserved favourite for top goalscorer, while there's value in Alex Grimaldo finishing top of the pile for assists.

La Liga returns on Sunday August 16 (AEST) and once again, it's Barcelona and Real Madrid battling it out for supremacy.

The biggest talking point ahead of the new campaign is Jose Mourinho's return to Real Madrid and Los Blancos' subsequent splash in the transfer market, which is headlined by the marquee arrival of teenage sensation Yan Diomande.

However, Mourinho hasn't been the force he once was for a long time now and Barcelona have all the pieces in place to secure a third straight La Liga trophy - especially if they're able to land the services of World Cup player of the tournament Rodri from Man City.

Let's not beat around the bush, Mourinho is washed. The enigmatic Portuguese manager hasn't won a league title since all the way back in 2015. The Special One's only trophy across his last four managerial jobs was the Conference League with Roma back in 2022.

Mourinho's appointment screams desperation and for a return to the glory days. But as was the case with France vs Spain at the World Cup, there's a case to be made there's just too many chef's in the kitchen and Spain's (Barcelona's) trusted structure under Hansi Flick will land more success.

Yes, Real have the flair with Mbappe, Vini Jr, Jude Bellingham and Diomande, but their midfield is still lacking. There's still no real replacement for Toni Kroos or Luka Modric and as we saw at the World Cup, defence and midfield proves the difference.

Barcelona are equipped with Spanish stars Pedri, Dani Olmo and Gavi at the time of writing, while Rodri's proposed move would give them a monumental boost in the title race. Throw in Pau Cubarsi in the centre of defence and you have the nucleus of the La Roja side that surged to World Cup glory in the summer.

Raphinha, Lamine Yamal and new arrival Anthony Gordon will do the damage up front - the only question mark for me is an out-and-out striker, with Ferran Torres rumoured to be heading to PSG.

Sevilla have suffered a big fall from grace over the last few seasons and appear worth a relegation punt here.

After some successful seasons challenging near the top of the ladder and triumphing in the Europa League, Sevilla have hit some troubles financially and recently a proposed takeover bid led by Sergio Ramos collapsed, leaving them in further turmoil.

Los Rojiblancos have tumbled down the table over the last three seasons, finishing in 14th, 17th and 13th. Across the last two campaigns, Sevilla have only finished one point above the drop zone.

Sevilla have been forced to sell star defender Juanlu Sanchez to Bournemouth and are lacking real quality ahead of this season - they could be in for another dogged relegation battle.

Even though I don't think Real can win the league, you just can't go past Mbappe for most goals.

Mbappe was the top scorer in the World Cup with 10, while he has fired in 56 goals across the last two La Liga seasons.

The French superstar will once again lead the line for Real as striker, with Vini and Diomande on the flanks.

No need to overthink this one and odds of $1.60 are decent enough. Barring injuries, Mbappe won't be caught.

Yamal is the deserved favourite after finishing top of the pile with 11 last season, but he has struggled with injuries lately and wasn't too impactful at the recent World Cup. He's the dominant favourite at $2.75, but that's not good enough value for me.

Instead, I'm going to take a punt on new Atletico Madrid signing Alex Grimaldo. Over his three seasons with Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, he racked up a staggering 45 assists in 145 games.

Grimaldo registered 61 goal-scoring chances, 205 crosses and 87 corners last season and should assume primary corner and indirect free-kick duties with Atletico, where he will be deployed at left wingback and given license to get forward by Diego Simeone.

At $34, the Spanish wingback is worth a small stake.
