La Liga is the top level of professional football in Spain, boasting the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in a league that keeps fans on the edge of their seats each and every week.

Barcelona were the best side in the competition across the 2024/25 season as they secured the trophy ahead of arch-rivals Real and Atletico. Now, all eyes will be on whether the champions can defend their crown this season.

Barcelona were not fancied to secure the trophy at the start of last season, but they managed to hold off the challenge of Real Madrid as they ended the season with a four-point lead over their great rivals.

After releasing the trophy following a single season as champions, Real will be desperate to show that this was just a blip. Interestingly, it follows a trend in which neither Barcelona nor Real have been able to defend their crown. Indeed, Real secured the trophy in the 2021/22 season, with Barcelona triumphing in 2022/23 and the pattern repeating itself over the next two seasons.

With some very strong teams in the competition, the champions defending their crown is clearly very difficult. However, this is not down to the sides that sat in fourth and below, with sides outside of the top three not on the same level. Even Atletico Madrid have struggled, with their title win in 2020/21 something of a flash in the pan.

This season will prove very interesting following the failures of each of Real, Barcelona and Atletico in the Champions League. While Barca won the league title, they were beaten by Inter Milan in the Champions League semi-finals.

Real and Atletico were eliminated even earlier, with no Spanish side appearing in the final. Real in particular have become synonymous with the Champions League, and their disappointing run will have them eyeing the trophy this season.

This may mean winning the league title takes something of a back seat. This could culminate in the top sides all dropping points, thus making the competition even closer.
