Australia will head to the voting booths this year to vote on The Indigenous Voice Vote. Full guide to The Voice Referendum 2023

The vote will allow the people of Australia to have their say in a referendum regarding a change in the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by creating a body known as the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Voice.

Below is everything you need to know ahead of The Voice Referendum.

When Is The Voice Referendum In Australia?

The Voice Referendum will take place on Saturday, October 14. October 11 will see the applications for postal voting close, while October 27 is the last day for receipt of postal votes.

How Does The Voice Referendum Work?

The Voice Referendum will see the Australian people voting yes or no on a single question. The question will read: 'A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?'

With the vote taking place on Saturday, October 14, those who can vote will decide whether to recognise the voice of the First Peoples of Australia.

In order for the amendment to the Constitution to be enacted, there must be a double majority that endorses it. Therefore, for the referendum to succeed, then more than half of the total national votes must be in favour of the amendment and more than half of the voters in at least four of the states must also vote in favour.

Therefore, if more than half of the national votes or more than half of the electors in at least three states vote against it, then the referendum will not be successful.

The Voice Referendum will create the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Voice that would give independent advice to the Parliament and Government, would be accountable and transparent and work alongside existing organisations and traditional structures.

It would choose a voice by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people based on the wishes of the local communities. It will represent the communities, will be gender balanced and include youth with the plan for it to be empowering, community-led, respectful, inclusive and culturally informed.
