Their sole representative on the card showed plenty of ability in three barrier trials in New Zealand before making his debut at Ruakaka back in June.

Samurai was crowded at the start of a 1200m set weights event on that occasion, but showed good form in finishing a close-up second to a colt who went on to score twice subsequently.

That form is working out well, with the third home that day placing in Group company, while the fifth home has won two of his three subsequent starts including a Listed event.

The son of Saxon Warrior has been gelded since that highly promising debut effort and having joined a top stable, he is expected to prove hard to beat here.

Michelle Payne’s gelding showed good form earlier this prep, including when ridden from off the pace to finish runner-up over this trip at Ballarat Synthetic when first-up in June.

The gelding went on to go one better when registering his first victory over the same track and trip the following month.

Princeofnottingham proved that he handles turf when fourth over 1300m at Benchmark 64 level at Bendigo and that effort saw him beaten just over three lengths on a Soft 6 surface last month.

The son of Pierro was crowded late in a below-par run when dropping to 1000m at the same venue subsequently.

The tactically versatile gelding should appreciate the return to the distance he gets here and he looks like value with Dakotah Keane’s 3kg claim another positive.
