Ballarat Synthetic Value Bet - Race 2 No. 2 Orion The Hunter

Shane Nichols’ gelding takes the eye having won at this venue on each of his last two starts.

The first of those saw the three-year-old overcome a slow start when delivering a half-length victory in a 1500m Benchmark 58 handicap in May.

The selection finished strongly having raced from off the pace in the early stages as a result of his slow start that day.

However, the three-year-old demonstrated his tactical versatility when racing close to the speed prior to getting home by a narrow margin here on June 14.

The pick contested a Benchmark 64 handicap over the same track and trip that day and he should have no issue with the drop back to 1400m.

The form of that latest effort is working out well with the fourth home Got Yourself A Gun winning on the synthetic track at Pakenham subsequently.

While Zac Spain’s mount steps up in grade here he has an inside barrier and looks value to complete a hat-trick.

Ballarat Synthetic Next Best Bet - Race 3 No. 8 Western Conqueror

One of four juveniles in the race, he has demonstrated ability when racing over 1200m on both previous starts.

The first of those saw him beaten just over two-and-a-half-lengths when racing wide and without cover in a maiden at Sandown in February.

The son of Unite And Conquer shaped as if he would improve for the experience when finishing fourth in a race won by subsequent Listed scorer Flyer.

The pick registered another solid effort when beaten just over two lengths having raced three wide in a maiden at Pakenham just over two weeks later.

The gelding raced on a sound surface on each occasion and was spelled following that Pakenham effort.

The selection is less exposed than most of his rivals and while his ability to handle the track has to be taken on trust an inside alley is a positive in this event.

The drop back in distance shouldn’t pose an issue and he looks capable of breaking his maiden for the Lloyd Kennewell & Lucy Yeomans stable.

Ballarat Synthetic Roughie - Race 5 No. 7 Life Sentence

The three-year-old recorded three placed efforts in 2023 with two of those coming on the synthetic track at Pakenham.

While the gelding finished outside of the first three in his first four starts this prep the switch to this track resulted in him recording his first win on May 28.

The selection finished well when winning by over a length in a 1400m maiden on that occasion and he again acquitted himself well here subsequently.

Racing over the same course and distance the pick raced close to the speed prior to finishing third in a Benchmark 58 handicap.

The pick was beaten just under a length having jumped from a wide barrier that day and he has a better alley in four for this contest.

Eoin Walsh’s mount has run well over around this distance in the past and he may prove capable of springing a surprise.

Ballarat Synthetic Best Bet - Race 7 No. 1 Where’s Poppy

The seven-year-old demonstrated good form last prep winning twice including by a narrow margin in a 1347m event at Geelong in August.

The pick contested a Benchmark 64 handicap on that occasion and he was spelled following a ninth in a Benchmark 70 handicap at Stawell in early January.

The son of Magnus resumed with a solid effort when contesting a 1350m Restricted 64 handicap on a heavy 8 track at Donald last month.

The gelding hung in the straight and faded late on that day with the drop back to 1200m looking likely to suit.

The drop back to a Benchmark 58 handicap is a further positive with the selection expected to have improved for that Donald effort.

Promising apprentice Sarah Field takes three kilograms off the gelding’s back with her mount having performed well when third on his only previous start at this track.

Trainer Thomas Carberry boasts an impressive 29% strike-rate (9/31) with his runners at this venue and his representative is taken to salute in the finale.
