French Formula One driver Romain Grosjean has stated he wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for the "halo" system after his car exploded into a fireball on Sunday night.

Smashing into a steel barrier in the opening lap of the race, Grosjean's car tore in half and burst into flames.

In a video posted from a nearby hospital where he was taken to following the accident, Grosjean paid thanks to the halo system which he stated saved his life, a system in which he was originally against.

The halo system, which was made mandatory for the Formula One in 2018, consists of a curved titanium bar which surrounds the drivers head, safeguarding them during crashes.

Although the system originally received negative feedback from some drivers and fans for its look and claims that it took away from the authenticity of Formula One, many believe if it wasn't for halo Grosjean wouldn't have survived the crash.
