F1 Canadian Grand Prix 2026 Preview & Predictions: Can Anyone Stop Antonelli in Montreal?

The 2026 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix is set for an action-packed weekend at Montreal's unpredictable Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. Mercedes, led by the in-form rookie Kimi Antonelli, are favored to win, but George Russell is expected to mount his strongest challenge yet, especially after last year's victory. The Sprint format and potentially chaotic race conditions make McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen credible threats. However, Antonelli's composure and Mercedes' speed remain the benchmark, making him the safest pick for victory.

Kimi Antonelli will win again in Montreal, but George Russell is finally poised to push him harder than at any point this season.

Formula 1 returns to Canada after an unusual opening stretch to 2026, and the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve arrives at the perfect moment in the championship fight. Mercedes still lead both standings, but the gap behind them is beginning to tighten. McLaren are improving quickly, Ferrari remain dangerous, and Red Bull’s Miami upgrades may finally give Max Verstappen something to fight with.

Montreal has always been one of the most unpredictable tracks on the calendar. Long straights, heavy braking zones and the infamous Wall of Champions reward confidence but punish impatience. Safety cars, strategy swings and changing weather regularly flip races upside down, making Canada one of the hardest weekends to control from the pit wall.

The Sprint format only increases the pressure. With one practice session before Sprint Qualifying, teams must arrive with strong baseline setups immediately. Mercedes remain favourites thanks to outright pace and Antonelli’s incredible run of form, but this circuit historically creates opportunities for outsiders.

McLaren’s execution cost them badly in Miami, Ferrari still need a breakthrough win, and Verstappen remains too dangerous to ignore at a low-downforce circuit with overtaking opportunities.

Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix Qualifying Tips


Qualifying in Montreal is all about commitment. Drivers attack kerbs aggressively, brake late into the final chicane and run millimetres from the walls. One mistake can destroy a lap instantly, which makes confidence critical.

George Russell looks perfectly placed to challenge for pole after winning here last year and traditionally performing strongly at stop-start circuits. Mercedes continue to hold the strongest overall package, particularly over one lap, and Russell’s motivation to strike back against Antonelli adds another layer to the weekend.

Antonelli remains a genuine threat given his current form, while Norris should again put McLaren in the fight if the team execute cleanly. Ferrari could surprise as well. Their strong straight-line speed and launch performance suit Montreal better than several earlier circuits.

Verstappen is the wildcard. If Red Bull’s upgrades genuinely work across multiple layouts, he could easily force his way into the front rows.

Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix Race Tips


Canada rarely produces straightforward races, and strategy flexibility will matter just as much as pace. Safety cars, tyre timing and track position often decide outcomes here more than outright dominance.

Antonelli still enters as the safest race pick. Mercedes have the strongest car overall, and his composure under pressure has been remarkable for a rookie. However, this feels like Russell’s best chance yet to reset the internal Mercedes fight, especially at a circuit where he won last season.

McLaren should again be close enough to pressure Mercedes if they avoid strategic mistakes, while Ferrari’s race pace could finally give them a shot at victory if the race becomes chaotic. Verstappen also cannot be discounted at a circuit where overtaking is genuinely possible.

It is tough to back against Antonelli here but Verstappen will pressure once again. 

Verdict

Mercedes will dominate in Montreal with Antonelli claiming victory once again. Max Verstappen will close out the podium.
