The Tasmania JackJumpers are hitting their stride, winning their last five games and proving they’re a team to watch as the season progresses. On the weekend, they put up 100 points against the struggling New Zealand Breakers, showcasing their offensive firepower and team cohesion.
The standout performer was Jordan Crawford, who exploded for 24 points off the bench. Crawford has embraced his new role, providing a spark while allowing younger players like Sean Macdonald to step up and showcase their development.
Speaking of Macdonald, the young guard was instrumental once again, finishing with 17 points, while Milton Doyle added 10 points, six rebounds, and seven assists in a typically well-rounded performance. Big man Will Magnay also had a strong showing, flirting with a triple-double as he tallied six points, six rebounds, and eight assists.
Off the court, the JackJumpers recently signed veteran forward Ian Hummer, a 34-year-old with extensive experience in Europe since leaving Princeton in 2013. While Hummer isn’t expected to drastically change the team’s trajectory, his shooting touch and veteran presence add another layer of depth to a squad already finding its rhythm.
The numbers paint a positive picture for Tasmania. Scoring balance has been a highlight, with four players hitting double digits against New Zealand and five players doing the same in their win over Cairns the previous week. This balanced attack has been a key factor in their success.
Sean Macdonald has been a game changer
Sean Macdonald, in particular, deserves significant credit. The young guard has become the JackJumpers’ anchor, steering the team with poise and providing energy when it’s most needed. His development has been transformative for Tasmania, helping them build confidence and consistency.
That said, it’s worth noting that the JackJumpers’ recent schedule has been kind. Three of their five wins came at home, and their opponents—New Zealand (twice), Adelaide (without Harrell and Davis), and Cairns—have all been struggling. While their form is encouraging, tougher tests lie ahead.
The addition of Hummer will also be interesting to watch. A journeyman who has played in almost every European league, Hummer brings size, strength, and professionalism to the team. While he won’t dominate games, his presence could provide a stabilizing force for Tasmania as they push to establish themselves as a genuine contender.
For now, the JackJumpers are positioned well to make a run at the finals. They’ve shown they can score in bunches, play unselfish basketball, and adapt to changing circumstances. But consistency and the ability to handle tougher competition will ultimately determine how far this team can go.
So, while it’s too early to get overly excited, Tasmania’s recent form gives fans plenty to smile about. As the season unfolds, the JackJumpers have a real chance to prove they belong in the upper echelon of the league.
