The Perth Wildcats, the most storied franchise in NBL history, are finally starting to hit their stride in NBL25. After a dominant Round 10 performance, which saw them score a combined 240 points across two games, the Wildcats look to be building momentum at the right time of the season.
In the first game of the round, Perth dismantled the Brisbane Bullets with a commanding 117-89 victory. This win showcased a balanced, team-oriented style of basketball, with an incredible eight players scoring in double digits. The second game against the New Zealand Breakers was a different story but just as impressive. Bryce Cotton delivered a historic performance, breaking the modern all-time NBL scoring record in a game that fans will talk about for years. Perth secured a 123-112 win, cementing their offensive prowess.
These wins pushed the Wildcats’ record to 8-7 and highlighted their resurgence, with three victories in their past four games. Despite their inconsistent start to the season, it’s clear that the team is beginning to find its rhythm.
Overcoming a Rocky Start
The Wildcats’ journey this season has been far from smooth. Bryce Cotton, their reigning MVP and offensive leader, missed several weeks due to injury. Key players like Dylan Windler and Tai Webster have also dealt with absences, while the coaching staff has struggled to unlock the full potential of Keanu Pinder. These challenges have hindered the team from reaching their peak, but recent performances suggest that they’re overcoming these obstacles.
Cotton’s return to form has been pivotal. His leadership and scoring ability have fuelled the Wildcats’ resurgence, and with him leading the charge, Perth looks capable of climbing the standings.
Offensive Firepower vs. Defensive Struggles
Offensively, the Wildcats are one of the most dangerous teams in the league. Their ability to pile on points is unmatched, but their defensive struggles remain a concern. They rank second-last in opponents’ points per game, conceding an average of 94 points per contest. Opposing teams are also shooting an alarming 47.3% from the field against them—the second-highest percentage allowed in the NBL. If these defensive issues aren’t addressed, they could prove costly in the playoffs.
However, there’s reason for optimism. Continuity within the rotation and roster is improving, and with it, confidence and cohesion are growing. If the Wildcats can shore up their defence, they’ll become a far more balanced and dangerous team.
What’s Next for the Wildcats?
For now, Wildcats fans have plenty to celebrate. Three wins in their last four games and a jaw-dropping 240 combined points in Round 10 have reignited hope for a deep postseason run. The team will look to extend its winning streak in Round 11 when they face the Illawarra Hawks and Adelaide 36ers—both winnable games that could push their streak to four.
While the season still promises its share of ups and downs, the Wildcats are showing signs of the resilience and firepower that have defined their legacy. If they can tighten up their defense and maintain their offensive dominance, this team could make some serious noise in NBL25. For now, Wildcats fans have every reason to be excited about what’s to come.
