The old adage by Bear Bryant rings true in sports: “Offense sells tickets, but defense wins championships.”
  • What’s Going Wrong with the Wildcats Defence?
  • How Can They Fix It?
  • A Turning Point Awaits for the Perth Wildcats

For the Perth Wildcats this NBL season, that wisdom seems particularly relevant. Despite a 3-1 record over their last four games, the alarm bells are ringing—not because of their scoring, but due to the points they’re conceding.

The Wildcats, a franchise with a storied history, were once known for their defensive identity, strong culture, and discipline. Just a decade ago, defence was the foundation of their success. Fast forward to today, and the numbers paint a starkly different picture.

The Wildcats have allowed opponents to score 100 points in three of their last four games, and in two of those, they conceded over 110 points. While they’ve kept up offensively in these shootouts, it’s clear this style of play isn’t sustainable for championship contention.

What’s Going Wrong with the Wildcats Defence?

The Wildcats’ defensive focus has seemingly disappeared. While they’ve improved their rebounding to some extent, their overall defense has taken a sharp decline. Good defense requires discipline and buy-in from the players, a trait that comes from trusting the coach and the system. Unfortunately, Perth’s defense has been plagued by breakdowns.

Interior Defense: The team lacks a strong presence in the paint, often allowing easy drives to the rim.

Three-Point Coverage: They overcommit to guarding the perimeter, even against inconsistent shooters, leaving gaps elsewhere.

Zone Issues: Poor timing and communication in zone defenses result in open looks for opponents.
On paper, this roster should be far more effective. Tai Webster is a versatile guard with quick feet who can defend larger players. Kristian Doolittle, one of the league’s top defenders, often finds himself stretched too thin. Keanu Pinder possesses the physical tools to be a defensive force but lacks the consistency and focus needed to excel.

How Can They Fix It?

Addressing these issues requires action both off and on the court:

Off the Court: The team must have honest, constructive conversations. They need to rebuild trust, commitment, and understanding within the group. With a roster full of veterans who have played at the highest levels and won championships, they already know what’s required to succeed. These discussions should focus on accountability and aligning on their collective goals.

On Court Communication: The Wildcats need to prioritize clear, consistent communication on defense. Miscommunication leads to breakdowns, and players must coordinate their efforts rather than assuming their teammates will cover for them.

Defensive Adjustments: Experiment with strategies like full-court presses to disrupt opponents and create turnovers. Implement a more effective 2-3 zone to clog the paint and limit open three-point looks. Done correctly, this can force opponents into mistakes and rushed decisions.

Effort and Buy-In: Defence requires relentless effort and commitment. This team must embrace a mindset of playing for each other, their coach, and the Wildcats’ proud legacy.

A Turning Point Awaits for the Perth Wildcats

While the Wildcats have no trouble scoring, their championship aspirations hinge on their ability to fix their defensive woes. Bryce Cotton is a generational talent, but he can’t carry the team by himself every night. His teammates need to step up—not as spectators to his brilliance, but as active contributors who can win games against top-tier opposition.

The road to improvement doesn’t require a complete overhaul, but it does demand effort, trust, and a willingness to adapt. If the Wildcats can address these shortcomings, they’ll not only compete but potentially thrive as the season progresses. As the saying goes, “Defense wins championships.” Now it’s up to Perth to prove they’re still capable of playing that way.
