Canada vs Australia Tips & Predictions - Socceroos test themselves against Canada in Montreal

The upcoming friendly match between Canada and Australia marks an important preparation step for both teams ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Australia, on a six-game winning streak, aims to continue this momentum against a Canadian side that has recently secured wins over Romania and Wales. Despite missing key players like Alphonso Davies, Canada will still field a strong lineup led by Jonathan David. The article suggests backing only one team to score, with Australia as a strong contender for a win or draw due to their recent form.

Canada vs Australia Tips & Predictions

The Socceroos continue their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a friendly showdown against Canada at the Saputo Stadium in Montreal on Friday night (Saturday morning AEDT).

Australia come into this clash on a six-game winning streak, finishing their Asian World Cup qualifying campaign strongly before defeating New Zealand in a pair of home and away matches last month. There's hopes of a new golden generation coming through, with the likes of Nestory Irankunda, Jordan Bos (who recently became the first Australian to win the Eredivisie Player Of The Month award for September), Max Balard and Mohamed Toure all impressing in Europe and in their most recent appearances for the Socceroos. Meanwhile, Canada are also in strong form, coming off a pair of away wins over Romania and Wales in the September international window.

This will be a great test for the Socceroos to see how they're really tracking ahead of the World Cup (no offence to New Zealand). Although Canada will be missing star players such as Alphonso Davies, Moise Bombito and Alistair Johnston through injury, they will still field an impressive line-up, led by Juventus star Jonathan David. I'm backing BTTS - No and Australia in the Double Chance market.

Head To Head

This will be their first meeting since a friendly in 2013, when the Socceroos came away with a 3-0 victory. Josh Kennedy, Dario Vidosic and Matt Leckie got on the scoresheet that day.

Canada Form

Canada earned direct qualification into the 2026 FIFA World Cup as one of the three host nations alongside USA and Mexico. It will be just the third time the Canadians have featured at football's showpiece competition.

As a result, Canada have enjoyed ample time to prepare for this tournament. However, it hasn't all been smooth sailing - earlier this year, they were knocked out of the Gold Cup by Guatemala on penalties after starting the match as $1.19 favourites.

However, Canada have bounced back strongly, earning two solid wins on the road in Europe last month, crushing Romania 3-0 before a 1-0 triumph over Wales.

Canada Team News

Manager Jesse Marsch will be without the services of Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies due to a long-term injury. Moise Bombito and Alistair Johnston are also sidelined.

Juventus attacker Jonathan David will be the main man for Canada, while Cyle Larin - who is a teammate of Socceroos defender Jordan Bos at Feyenoord - is also in line for some minutes.

Australia Form

It was looking dicy there for a minute, but after a nightmare start, the Socceroos ended up qualifying comfortably for the 2026 World Cup - the sixth consecutive time they will feature at the big dance.

Tony Popovic remains undefeated as Socceroos manager, guiding the team to automatic qualification on the back of winning their final four games - including toppling powerhouses Japan and Saudi Arabia.

Australia were unconvincing in their 1-0 win over New Zealand in Canberra, but produced a much better performance in the away game in Auckland, dominating with a 3-1 victory as Mo Toure bagged a brace and Nestory Irankunda also found the back of the net.

Australia Team News

Toure also scored for Danish side Randers this past weekend, but he picked up a shoulder injury and will be monitored before kick off.

Irankunda has got to be considered a certain starter after an electric start to the season for Watford, however Adrian Segecic - who has also been starring in the English Championship for Portsmouth this season - is nursing niggling injuries and wasn't selected for these friendlies.

A notable inclusion is midfielder Alex Robertson, who is also eligible to play for Scotland and Peru, while Cam Devlin has been awarded for his great form with the table-topping Hearts in the Scottish Premier League.

Mat Ryan has also been recalled after some impressive performances for Levante in La Liga, while Daniel Arzani is a surprising inclusion considering he's barely featured in Hungary this term.

Fran Karacic has withdrawn and will be replaced by the uncapped Jacob Italiano.

You can view the full Socceroos squad below.

Daniel Arzani, Max Balard, Jordan Bos, Martin Boyle, Cameron Burgess, Alessandro Circati, Milos Degenek, Cameron Devlin, Mitch Duke, Nicholas D’Agostino, Joe Gauci, Jason Geria, Ajdin Hrustic, Nestory Irankunda, Paul Izzo, Fran Karacic, Hayden Matthews, Connor Metcalfe, Lewis Miller, Aiden O’Neill, Alex Robertson. Kye Rowles, Mat Ryan, Mohamed Toure, Patrick Yazbek

Verdict

Both these teams have been strong defensively in recent games, so backing only one team to find the back of the net as the best bet.

The Socceroos have been slowly improving and can snatch at least a draw on the road against a Canadian side missing some of their best players.
