Benin vs Senegal Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Senegal and Benin both still have the opportunity to top Group D when they square off at the Africa Cup of Nations in Tangier on Tuesday night.

Both nations were well positioned to advance from Group D - be it by advancing in the top two automatic spots or as one of the best third-ranked teams. However, Senegal - one of the pre-tournament favourites - will be determined to assert their authority and top of the group as they look to start sinking their teeth into this competition. With the likes of Sadio Mane, Kalidou Koulibaly, Nicolas Jackson and Ismaila Sarr at their disposal, Senegal, the 2021 AFCON Champions, really should be making the semi-finals at the very least. Meanwhile, Benin are buoyed after winning their first ever AFCON match in their previous outing against Botswana and now turn their attention to progressing to the knockout phase.

Even in defeat, Benin look good to advance considering their second-place ranking of the best third-placed group sides - although nothing can be taken for granted. Overall, Senegal should prove too strong. They're unbeaten against Benin since their first ever meeting in 1961 and have won six of their last eight games in all competitions - with the majority of those victories being accompanied by a clean sheet. Mane has a great goalscoring record against Benin and overall for his country, so the veteran winger is backed to find the back of the net.
  • Senegal have won six of their last eight games in all competitions
  • Five of Senegal's last six wins have been to nil
  • Benin have seen BTTS - No in their last nine games
  • Senegal have won seven of the last nine meetings between the pair
  • Sadio Mane has scored four goals in as many appearances vs Benin in his career & was on target vs Congo in his last game
  • Four of Senegal's last seven wins over Benin have been by a 1-0 score

Benin vs Senegal Head To Head

Benin defeated Senegal 4-3 in their first ever meeting in 1961, but since then it's been one-way traffic, with the Lions of Teranga winning seven of the last nine encounters.

Benin Form Analysis

Benin arrived at this year's AFCON on a two-game losing run, failing to score in defeats to Nigeria and Burkina Faso.

Things didn't get any better in their opening fixture, with Benin suffering a narrow 1-0 loss to Congo DR.

However, there was cause for celebration in their next outing, with The Cheetahs securing their first ever win at the AFCON since debuting in 2004, edging out Botswana 1-0 courtesy of Yohan Roche's strike in the 28th minute.

That result means Gernot Rohr's side still have a great chance of advancing to the knockout phase of the AFCON for just the second time.

Benin Team News

Marcel Dandjinou, Olaitan Junior, Tidjani Mohamed, and Steve Mounie all returned from suspension in the win over Botswana and would be expected to retain their spots here.

  • Goalkeepers: Marcel Dandjinou (Loto), Kassifa Saturnin Allagbe (Chaurey), Serge Obassa (Remo Stars)

  • Defenders: Samadou Attidjikou (Smouha), Charlemagne Azongnitode (Oulu), Rodrigue Fassinnou (Coton FC), David Kiki (FCSB), Rachid Moumini (Sumqayit FK), Tamimou Ouorou (no club), Yohan Roche (Petrolul), Mohamed Tijani (Yverdon), Olivier Verdon (Ludogorets)

Senegal Form Analysis

Senegal remain one of the leading contenders to collect the silverware, but they aren't ensured of their spot in the knockout phase just yet - although it would take a shocking chain of results to see them miss out.

Pape Thiaw's side launched their trophy pursuit with a dominant 3-0 victory over Botswana, with star striker Nicolas Jackson grabbing a brace, while Pape Cherif Ndiaye also got on the scoresheet late.

However, the 2021 AFCON champions couldn't confirm their place in the R16 in their second group game, setting for a 1-1 draw with an in-form Congo DR side, with Sadio Mane equalising for his nation.

Unbeaten inside 90 minutes at the AFCON since 2019, Senegal should be able to do enough to secure their ticket to the R16.

Senegal Team News

Senegal have a mostly settled squad, although Ismaila Sarr was taken off early in the draw against Congo as he continues to recover from an ankle problem.

  • Goalkeepers: Edouard Mendy (Al Ahli), Yehvann Diouf (Nice), Mory Diaw (Le Havre)

  • Defenders: Ilay Camara (Anderlecht), Krépin Diatta (AS Monaco), Antoine Mendy (Nice), Kalidou Koulibaly (Al Hilal), Abdoulaye Sek (Maccabi Haifa), Moussa Niakhate (Lyon), Mamadou Sarr (Strasbourg), El-Hadji Malick Diouf (West Ham), Ismail Jakobs (Galatasaray)

  • Forwards: Sadio Mane (Al Nassr), Iliman Ndiaye (Everton), Nicolas Jackson (Bayern Munich), Habib Diallo (Metz), Boulaye Dia (Lazio), Cheikh T Sabaly (Metz), Assane Diao (Como), Ibrahim Mbaye (PSG), Cherif Ndiaye (Samsunspor), Ismaila Sarr (Crystal Palace)
