Having suffered their first A-League defeat prior to Christmas when going down 4-0 at home to Western United, Auckland produced the perfect response at the weekend.

The ladder leaders bounced back in style as they thumped reigning premiers Central Coast Mariners 4-1 on the road.

The victory allowed Steve Corica's side to open up a four-point gap at the top and move their impressive debut season record to seven wins and a draw in nine matches.

At home, Auckland have been impressive. They have beaten Brisbane Roar 2-0, Sydney FC 1-0, Newcastle Jets 2-0 and Wellington Phoenix 2-1 before the shock defeat to Western United.

Melbourne Victory Form


Melbourne Victory suffered just their second defeat of the season at the weekend, going down 3-0 to rivals Sydney FC in the Big Blue.

It is now just one point from the last six available with Victory have also been held to a 1-1 draw by cross-town rivals Melbourne City before Christmas.

The dip in form coincided with the departure of manager Patrick Kisnorbo to take up an assistant coaching role in Japan.

Victory remain in third spot on the ladder despite those two results thanks to five wins in their opening seven games before the festive period. 

Verdict

Auckland got back on track at the weekend and the leaders are backed to win again at home against a Victory side but has dropped a level over the Christmas period.
