The Queensland Derby is one of two Group 1 features contested on Saturday, May 30, as the Brisbane Winter Carnival shifts from Doomben to Eagle Farm.

Chris Waller has already claimed three Queensland Derby victories, including two of the past five editions, and the leading trainer again appears to hold a strong hand in 2026 with Monopolistic (barrier 17) and Providence (barrier 8) emerging as key contenders for the Group 1 feature.

Monopolistic returned to winning form at Gosford over 2100m in Benchmark 78 company last start, continuing the promising start to his career after winning two of his three appearances during his first campaign.

The son of Savabeel looks to have come back in strong order this preparation and shapes as one of the leading hopes heading toward the Queensland Derby.

Providence enhanced his Queensland Derby credentials with a solid closing effort to finish third in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate on May 16, one of the key lead-up races to the staying feature.

The gelding had been kept fresh for that assignment after finishing runner-up in the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate on April 18 and appeared to relish the rise in distance late in the contest.

Roger James and Robert Wellwood combined to win the 2022 Queensland Derby with Pinarello, and the New Zealand stable again profiles as a major player with Solid Gold (barrier 18).

The filly made late ground from the rear to finish fifth in the Rough Habit Plate during her Australian debut after putting together consecutive victories in New Zealand, highlighted by a Group 3 win over 2100m on April 18.

Accidental Bid (barrier 6) finished sixth in the Rough Habit Plate following a month between runs after missing a scheduled start in the South Australian Derby.

The Ciaron Maher-trained import had impressed with victories at his first two Australian appearances and still profiles as a runner capable of further improvement stepping into the Queensland Derby.

Kilman (barrier 3) is another leading contender from the Chris Waller stable after producing a front-running display to claim the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate, one of the premier Queensland Derby lead-up races.

Beauty Swift (barrier 22) and One Step Closer (barrier 20) also come through the Rough Habit Plate, with Beauty Swift finishing second in the feature, while One Step Closer struggled to make an impact after settling back in the field, although was the third market elect in that Group 3.
