Matthew Dunn celebrated a career-first Ramornie Handicap victory on Wednesday as Band Of Brothers produced a courageous on-speed performance to claim the Listed 1200m feature at Grafton.
Ridden confidently by Dylan Turner, the gelding jumped well to settle prominently before sustaining a strong gallop in the straight. When his challengers loomed inside the final furlong, Band Of Brothers dug deep to repel them and hand Dunn a long-awaited breakthrough in one of country New South Wales' most prestigious sprints.
The victory continues a successful season for Dunn, one of the leading horsemen across Queensland and New South Wales, who has built a powerhouse stable from his Murwillumbah base.
With almost 1,500 career winners, Cepheus, Care To Think and Madotti rank among the standout performers to have raced from his stable, while Wednesday's triumph added another feature race to an already distinguished résumé.
First run in 1910, the Ramornie Handicap has developed into one of the signature races of the Grafton July Racing Carnival, traditionally attracting many of Australia's leading winter sprinters. The $200,000 Listed feature headlines the July 15 program before attention turns to Thursday's Grafton Cup meeting.
The Ramornie boasts a rich honour roll headed by champion sprinter Takeover Target, while recent winners include Ranges, The Big Goodbye, Ka Bling, Sha Of Gomer and now Band Of Brothers.
