Neither the Bucs or the Texans hit the spot for me last week, however I was more disappointed in Houston and there were some moments that got me excited when watching Tampa Bay.
The offensive line needed to improve in Houston, but after their game against the Rams, it doesn’t look like it. Stroud was unable to move the ball and with Tank Dell out he is struggling to find targets.
The Bucs on the other hand got an important road win against division rivals Atlanta and although their defence still had problems against the pass they stuffed the Falcons dual-run threat with Robinson and Allgeier. Baker Mayfield was impressive when he needed to be and with Chris Godwin out rookie Emeka Egbuka stood up in his first NFL match.
I expect this match to be pass heavy with both defences strong against the run. I have faith that Mayfield will be more accurate than he was against Atlanta finding windows in the Texans secondary.
Mike Evans didn’t connect with Mayfield in the endzone in Week 1, which is rare, and with more attention being given to Egbuka, expect the veteran wide receiver to find some more space against the Texans.

If I am being honest, I expected a little more from Baker and the crew in Tampa, who were tipped to dominate in the NFC South and even be a dark horse for the Super Bowl. Yes they got a 23-20 win against the Falcons, but it wasn’t pretty.
Maybe that is a little extreme but there are not many days when Baker Mayfield throws well under 200 yards, happening just 4 times last season. The Bucs QB was quiet with just 167 yards, however he played the field in front of him and still managed to throw 3 touchdown passes, including a two-minute drill conversion to win the game with a bullet post-route to rookie Emeka Egbuka.
Defensively, Tampa did a job on Atlanta’s dangerous run game, holding Bijian Robinson to just 24 yards and Tyler Allgeier to 24 yards. However, stopping the pass was their weakness in 2024 (ranked 4th worst) and it appears not much has changed with Michael Penix Jr. throwing for 298 yards and 27 completions.

If I was disappointed in the Bucs then I am distraught thinking about the Texans, who I have backed heavily in futures this season. It was a tall task to head to L.A and take down the Rams but to lose 14-9 and not score a touchdown has me worried.
Improvements were “made” to the offensive line to protect C.J Stroud but it didn’t appear in the first game of the season that the third-year QB had more time available to throw, being pressured 8 times in the match and sacked 3 times.
The positive is that the Texans defence held up well against the Rams allowing just 14 points and containing the run game of Kyren Williams to just 66 yards. A little work is needed against the pass with Stafford throwing for 245 yards and a 72.4 completion percentage, which was above his 2024 averages.
