The Chargers made one of the biggest statements of Week 1, toppling Kansas City 27-17 on the road in Rio. Justin Herbert was clinical, throwing for 318 yards and three touchdowns at a 131.7 passer rating. He spread the ball across multiple targets, with Keenan Allen hauling in 68 yards and a touchdown and rookie Ladd McConkey adding 74 yards. Tyler Conklin also provided a spark with 50 yards on just two receptions, underlining the balance in the passing attack.
Defensively, the Chargers did exactly what few teams have been able to do, contain Patrick Mahomes. They held the Chiefs to 5-of-14 on third down, hit the quarterback eight times, and limited Kansas City’s running backs to just 40 yards on 10 carries. That front-seven pressure was the backbone of their win and a sign of things to come.
On the ground, Omari Hampton got the bulk of the carries with 15 attempts for 48 yards, but at just 3.2 yards per rush it was hardly efficient. Najee Harris surprisingly managed just one carry all game, but with the backfield rotation still settling, his role is expected to increase in Week 2.
