Race 5 No. 6 Tierra

The New Zealand-bred ended 2024 on a high when breaking her maiden over 1600m at Stony Creek in December.

While her form tapered off afterwards, she has been consistent this preparation, placing in three of four starts. The best of those came when runner-up over this distance in a similar race here earlier this month, going down by less than half-a-length as a $1.90 favourite.

She had finished third in a Benchmark 64 over 1715m at Geelong prior to that, and with conditions expected to be similar on a Good 4 track, an inside draw should give her every chance to record a second career win.

Race 1 No. 12 Grinzinger Champ

Danny O’Brien’s filly produced a couple of strong jump-out performances before debuting here earlier this month. She scored in a 900m heat at Geelong after placing second over 800m at Flemington, showing good early promise.

On debut she raced on the pace before finishing third in an 1100m maiden, beaten less than three lengths by a Ciaron Maher-trained first starter. The runner-up, Unobscured, has since franked the form with a win at Benalla.

Drawn well on the inside, the daughter of Wootton Bassett looks well placed to break her maiden at the second attempt.

Race 2 No. 8 Lord Coda

Ciaron Maher’s gelding has improved since finishing last of 12 on debut at Geelong last month. He followed up with a runner-up finish on the Ballarat synthetic and was then fourth in a 1200m maiden on rain-affected ground two weeks ago.

Having opened at $9.60, solid support has seen him firm into $6.60 with BoomBet, indicating good market confidence in his chances here.

Stats Say:

Jockey Billy Egan boasts a 20% strike rate (9/45) at country meetings this season and has five rides on the card.

All five are expected to start at single-figure odds, including Pleasing Smile for the Hayes stable in Race 3. That gelding comes off a close second at Wodonga and, with blinkers applied, looks well placed to go one better.
