Flemington Value Bet - Race 1 No. 5 Privileged Son

Privileged Son has taken a few runs to find form this prep, registering his first placing when third at Warrnambool in July. He was beaten just under four lengths when stepped up to 3100m for a Benchmark 70 at the same venue, a run that came on a Heavy 9 track.

The son of Savabeel built on that when successful over 3172m at Warrnambool last month, coming home over a length clear of his rivals on another rain-affected surface. The return to a sounder track is no concern given his versatility.

Importantly, the gelding performed well when placing third in the Spring Preview over this course and distance last year, so he handles Flemington. This is only his second try at headquarters, which adds upside.

With Patrick & Michelle Payne boasting a 24% strike-rate (11/45) at this track since teaming up, Privileged Son shapes as value to land another staying test.

Living Legends Trophy Tips (Race 3)

Flemington Next Best Bet - Race 3 No. 2 She’s A Hustler

She’s A Hustler displayed strong form last prep, kicking off with a first-up win in a Benchmark 58 over 1600m at Pakenham in February. She cleared out by three-and-a-half lengths that day, before progressing to two further wins at Sandown.

The second of those Sandown triumphs came in a 2100m Benchmark 70 on good ground, and while she couldn’t complete the four-timer, she was runner-up in Listed company in Morphettville’s Centaurea Stakes. That effort underlined her class.

Spelled after that May defeat, the mare has been prepared with three jump outs ahead of this return. She boasts an excellent fresh record, winning twice from three first-up runs.

Back to 1800m under regular rider Jordan Childs, she appeals as a strong winning chance first-up for Grahame Begg.

VRC Member Leslie Birrell Tips (Race 5)

Flemington Best Bet - Race 5 No. 5 Xtra Rush

Xtra Rush didn’t debut until the start of this season but is quickly making up for lost time, arriving unbeaten in three starts. He began with a dominant four-and-a-half length maiden win over 1600m at Cranbourne on soft ground.

He proved adaptable when following up over 1700m at Sale on firmer going, overcoming a wide run early to prevail by just under a length in Benchmark 64 grade. That versatility has been a key to his quick rise.

Stepping to 2050m at Mornington earlier this month, he settled more conservatively before taking over in the straight and scoring by more than two lengths, again under a big weight.

Richard Laming’s gelding has impressed at each step and looks primed to make it four from four with this rise in grade.

Howden Victoria Derby Preview Tips (Race 7)

Flemington Feature Bet - Race 7 No. 3 Options

Options is prominent in early Victoria Derby betting after winning both career starts. He kicked off with a narrow but strong maiden success over 1300m at Echuca on soft ground last month, with the form proving solid since.

The son of Impending backed that up when stepping to 1600m at Bendigo, overcoming a slow getaway on a Heavy 8 to power home from mid-division for a clear victory in Benchmark 62 grade.

He looks ready to relish more ground and should get the right run from an inside barrier with similar tactics. The switch to a firmer surface is a small query, but he has handled varying conditions to date.
