The Illawarra Hawks are in prime position to secure a win against the Cairns Taipans in their upcoming NBL26 matchup. The Hawks' recent victory over South East Melbourne showcased their potential, with standout performances from JaVale McGee and QJ Peterson. In contrast, the Taipans have struggled, losing 11 of their last 12 games and suffering from an imbalanced attack. Illawarra's superior scoring ability and home advantage should be decisive, while Cairns must find more depth beyond their key players Jack McVeigh and Andrew Andrews to stay competitive.

Illawarra Hawks vs Cairns Taipans NBL26 Expert Analysis & Picks

Illawarra get the perfect chance to build momentum at WIN Entertainment Centre against a Cairns side that just can’t stop the bleeding.

The Hawks come into this one off a wild 113–109 overtime win over South East Melbourne, a result that summed up both their ceiling and their chaos. They gave up 16 threes to the Phoenix and still found a way, smashing them inside the arc with 42 made two-point field goals and riding monster performances from JaVale McGee, Will Hickey and QJ Peterson. When Illawarra play with pace and punch, they’re a genuine handful, they average 90.6 points per game and lead the league in both field goal percentage (46.7%) and rebounds (45.4 per game).

Cairns, on the other hand, are in survival mode. They’ve lost 11 of their last 12 and come into this on a four-game skid, giving up 96.5 points per night while scoring just 81.4. Their latest effort was a 96-102 home loss to New Zealand, again showed the same pattern: Jack McVeigh and Andrew Andrews did the heavy lifting (58 combined points), but there was little support behind them. Away from home, the Taipans are averaging just 80.8 points and conceding 98.7, and their only recent wins have come in low-scoring grind-fests.

The matchup numbers all lean Illawarra. The Hawks have won three of the last five against Cairns and have taken the fourth quarter in each of their last six meetings, a good sign when you’re looking at late-game control. They’re fifth in the league for points scored and top-three in assists, while Cairns rank last in scoring and last in offensive rating. If Illawarra bring anything close to the energy they just showed against SEM, their superior size, efficiency and home-court edge should be too much for a Taipans side struggling to put together a full 40 minutes.

Illawarra should outclass Cairns at home, with their offensive balance and dominance on the glass setting up a comfortable win in front of the Wollongong faithful.

Illawarra Hawks Form & Team News

Illawarra’s season has been streaky, but the upside is obvious. They sit at 5-9, averaging 90.6 points for and 98.1 against, and their games at WIN Entertainment Centre have been high-event: 91.7 points scored and 95.7 conceded on average.

Their latest outing was an overtime classic, a 113-109 win over South East Melbourne. JaVale McGee posted another dominant double-double with 29 points and 13 boards, continuing a home stretch where he’s recorded a double-double in six of his last seven at WIN and scored 28+ points in each of his last three night games there. Will Hickey was outstanding as a lead guard with 16 points and 10 assists, extending a run of six or more dimes in ten straight games and 16+ points in each of his last four at home. Off the bench, QJ Peterson erupted for 42 points in 32 minutes and has now scored 19+ in three straight.

Illawarra’s issue remains consistency at the defensive end, they’re last in the league for opposition points but when they execute, the numbers look much healthier. They’ve won two of their last five at home, both times cracking triple figures, and their strength on the glass and efficiency from the field give them a real platform against weaker offences like Cairns.

Cairns Taipans Form & Team News

Cairns arrive in Wollongong under serious pressure. They’re 3-12 on the season, anchored to the bottom of the ladder and riding a four-game losing streak. Their most recent performance was a 96-102 home defeat to the Breakers, where once again the offence ran almost exclusively through Jack McVeigh and Andrew Andrews. McVeigh poured in 35 points and 7 rebounds and has scored 22+ in five of his last six, while Andrews added 23 points and 9 boards and has dished 8+ assists in four straight.

The problem is everyone else. The Taipans struggle to find reliable third and fourth options, and it’s killing them over 40 minutes. They average just 81.4 points per game, last in the NBL, and their defence isn’t bailing them out, opponents are scoring 96.5 per night, with Cairns ranking last in rebounds and bottom-three in both field goal percentage allowed and three-point defence. On the road they’re 2-4, scoring 79.6 and conceding 91.2 on average, with most losses coming by double digits.

Until they find more balance and support around McVeigh and Andrews, Cairns are going to continue to be vulnerable against higher-powered home teams like Illawarra.

Verdict

Illawarra should outclass Cairns at home, with their offensive balance and dominance on the glass setting up a comfortable win in front of the Wollongong faithful. The Game Total Under is one of the strongest historical angles in this matchup.
