In a highly anticipated Euroleague clash, Crvena Zvezda hosts Barcelona with hopes of turning their home arena into a fortress under coach Sasa Obradovic. The team has been a surprise contender this season with a series of impressive wins. Barcelona, guided by legendary coach Xavi Pascual, aims to overcome their inconsistencies. Despite a recent narrow win against ASVEL, they are grappling with improvements, particularly in defense. Last season, Zvezda managed an away victory but has struggled at home against Barcelona since the 2017/18 season.

Crvena Zvezda vs Barcelona Preview

Crvena Zvezda look down from the top of the standings and welcome Barcelona, a team they do not have fond memories of in recent seasons.

Will the home team end their uncomfortable run of losses against the Catalan side on their own court, or will Barca celebrate once again in Belgrade?

Crvena Zvezda Form & Team News

Crvena Zvezda have been one of the most pleasant surprises in the Euroleague so far this season. They opened the season with two losses, but since the arrival of coach Sasa Obradovic they have recorded 9 wins and 2 losses, while the Belgrade Arena has turned into an unbreakable fortress.

They demonstrated that last week when they defeated regular Final Four participant and title contender Olympiacos 91:80 at home.

Midway through the third quarter Olympiacos had their biggest lead at +12 and it looked like Zvezda were on the ropes, but the home players, fueled by the energy from the stands, found their flow and erased the deficit in just a few minutes.

At the start of the fourth quarter they continued in the same rhythm, and after a three pointer from Javonte Graham with 6:44 left the score was 72:65.

Olympiacos tried to get back into the game, but Crvena Zvezda always had an answer. In the final minutes, the previously quiet Codi Miller Mcintyre appeared with 10 points in the last three minutes to deliver the final blow.

Overall, every Zvezda player who stepped on the court contributed, and the top scorer was Jordan Nwora with 23 points in 26 minutes.

Barcelona Form & Team News

Barcelona currently sit eighth in the Euroleague standings, part of a group of seven teams with eight wins.

Since the return of their legendary coach Xavi Pascual, the team has recorded one win and one loss. After a narrow defeat away at Anadolu Efes, they secured their first win under Pascual.

At home they beat the weakest team in the league, ASVEL, 88:78. As expected, Pascual raised the team’s defensive aggression, but there are still flaws in their game that cannot be fixed in such a short time.

According to some reports, the new coach requested two signings, including a center, but the management told him there is no money.

If there is something positive besides the result from the ASVEL game, it is the improved scoring performance of last season’s top player Kevin Punter.

Since the start of the season Punter has been inefficient and unrecognizable, but against ASVEL he played his best game with 24 points on good shooting percentages (8/14) along with 7 assists.

Veteran Toko Shengelia also scored in double figures with 15 points and 6 rebounds, while guard Dario Brizuela added 12 points.

Head to head

Last season Crvena Zvezda celebrated a win at Blaugrana 78:74, but at home they have not beaten this club since the 2017/18 season.

Verdict

All four participants of last season’s Euroleague Final Four have already fallen on the floor of the Belgrade Arena, and now comes an opponent who has often celebrated victories here in the past.

The key for the home team will be stopping Barcelona’s inside game, which will threaten through Toko Shengelia and Jan Vesely, while outside Kevin Punter will wait for his chance for deadly three point shooting.

This will be far from an easy task for Zvezda, but at this moment I believe they are much closer to the win.
