LA Lakers are playing excellent basketball this season. LeBron James has played only four games due to injury, but in his absence, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves have taken on even greater responsibility.
This frontcourt duo is averaging a combined 64 points, 15 rebounds, and 16 assists per game, and they are the main reason the legendary franchise currently holds second place in the West behind the dominant Oklahoma City Thunder.
Lakers earned their eighth straight win last night, defeating the New Orleans Pelicans 133-121.
LeBron sat out again due to injury, and the show was taken over once more by Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
Luka finished with 34 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 assists, while Austin followed with an excellent 33 points and 8 assists.
Center Deandre Ayton also had a major impact, causing plenty of problems in the paint and finishing with a strong double-double of 22 points and 12 rebounds in just 26 minutes on the court.
We will see whether James plays in this game or misses his second straight appearance. More information on his status will be available closer to tip-off.
Phoenix Suns Form & Team News
Phoenix Suns have fallen into a mild slump over the past week, but despite that, they still sit in a solid 7th place in the Western Conference with a 12-9 record.
They have lost 3 of their last 4 games, and the biggest reason for these defeats is Devin Booker's shooting slump - over the past 6 games he is shooting only 35% from the field. Booker's three-point shot has completely abandoned him (22%), and even his trademark mid-range game has not been nearly as effective as before.
In their most recent game, the Suns suffered a heavy 130–112 loss on the road to a depleted Denver Nuggets team.
Phoenix actually played a solid first half, but then completely collapsed offensively in the second, which the experienced Nuggets punished by winning second half by 15 points.
Dillon Brooks continued his excellent season, but this time he did not receive enough support from his teammates to challenge such a strong opponent.
The Canadian forward finished with 27 points (10/18 FG). Time will tell whether he can sustain this level of play for the entire season. So far, he is putting up the best numbers of his 9-year career - 21.5 PPG on 45.1% shooting.
Head to Head
Last season, following the blockbuster Luka Doncic trade, these teams played one head-to-head matchup. The Lakers came out on top at home, winning 107-96.
Verdict
Given their current form and overall roster quality, the Lakers are favorites in this matchup, but I expect the Suns to at least put up a strong fight.
This is an ideal opportunity for Devin Booker to bounce back from several poor shooting nights, as he will be facing a defense that is not particularly elite on that end of the floor.
The Lakers play at an extremely fast pace, and I expect the Suns to match that tempo, setting up what should be a high-scoring and exciting game.
