After failing to make an impact when unsuited first-up in the All Aged Stakes, Fangirl (barrier 11) headed north for the Group 1 Kingsford-Smith Cup, with a tick-over trial completed between runs following her Randwick return.

The seven-year-old produced one of the eye-catching performances of the race, charging home from the rear to finish third, and the extra 100m of the Stradbroke Handicap appears ideal for the four-time Group 1 winner.

Regal Award (barrier 9) has also attracted attention after saluting in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic on March 30, ending a frustrating run of near misses.

The Phillip Stokes-trained three-year-old receives a significant weight advantage under handicap conditions and is set to carry just 49.5kg with Luke Cartwright aboard.

Headley Grange (barrier 8) entered the winter carnival in solid form and was rewarded with a breakthrough Group 1 victory in the Kingsford-Smith Cup after a string of competitive performances.

The Joe Pride-trained galloper now returns to handicap conditions and looks reasonably treated with 55kg based on his weight-for-age form this year.

Another Wil (barrier 17) improved noticeably at his second run back from a spell when finishing fourth in the Kingsford-Smith Cup after a sound first-up effort in the Doomben 10,000.

Now third-up, the son of Street Boss appears to be building towards peak fitness and shapes as a genuine contender.

Sixties (barrier 3) was competitive in the Fred Best Classic when beaten just over two lengths after resuming from a freshen-up following his Doncaster Mile campaign.

Already a three-time Group winner this season, the colt appears well suited around 1400m, although he remains the first emergency and requires a scratching to gain a start.

Splash Back (barrier 12) enhanced her credentials with a Group 2 Victory Stakes triumph after enduring little luck in the Sapphire Stakes on return.

The mare has since contested the Kingsford-Smith Cup and now drops back into handicap conditions carrying 52kg.

Transatlantic (barrier 18) and Private Eye (barrier 4) are two more accomplished runners in the mix, with both boasting Group 1 victories during their careers.

Private Eye was placed in last year's Stradbroke Handicap, while local hope Transatlantic profiles as a major threat third-up after claiming the Group 1 Toorak Handicap at the corresponding stage of his spring preparation.

Stradbroke Handicap Winners

First run in 1890, the Stradbroke Handicap boasts a rich history and features some of the most celebrated names in Australian racing, including Rough Habit, Dane Ripper and All Our Mob.

Widely regarded as Queensland’s premier race, the Group 1 contest is a cornerstone of the Brisbane Winter Carnival and consistently attracts elite talent from around the country.

The Stradbroke Handicap has been contested over 1400m for most of its history, with the only recent exception coming in 2014 and 2015 when it was run over 1350m at Doomben during the redevelopment of Eagle Farm.

Among the race’s most notable champions is Rough Habit, who etched his name into Stradbroke folklore with victories in 1991 and 1992 as part of his remarkable Queensland winter campaigns.

More recent winners include Think About It in 2023, Stefi Magnetica in 2024 and War Machine in 2025, with each adding their name to the race’s distinguished honour roll.
