A second consecutive heavy home loss may not be a reason to sound the alarm yet, but it is certainly a warning that Zalgiris must show far more effort and intensity in the upcoming game.
After Maccabi Tel Aviv, Anadolu Efes also recorded a convincing win at Zalgirio Arena. Zalgiris were competitive for only 20 minutes, while the second half was dominated entirely by the visitors.
Unlike the game against Paris a week earlier, when Zalgiris produced an excellent team performance, this time there was hardly a single player in good rhythm.
The team’s main star, Sylvain Francisco, had a particularly poor outing, shooting just 3 of 12 from the field, while Zalgiris were outscored by 16 points during his time on the court.
Over their last two home games, Zalgiris have shot an incredibly poor 12 of 55 from three point range, just 22 percent, and those numbers must improve urgently if they are to compete effectively in the EuroLeague.
The positive news is that head coach Masiulis should have his full roster available for this game, with the only question mark being Arnas Butkevicius, whose status will be decided shortly before tip off.
Partizan Form & Team News
The wins against Bayern and Crvena Zvezda seem to have only masked and pushed under the rug the problems this club is currently facing.
When it was expected that they would record another win against Virtus Bologna and take a step forward, Partizan instead took two steps back.A complete lack of concentration and a clear game plan in the second half allowed a physically strong and well coached Virtus team to take full advantage.
Just like Zalgiris against Efes, Partizan did not exist in the second half against Virtus Bologna. In the final 20 minutes, the team coached by Dusko Ivanovic outscored Partizan 46:31.
It was another frustrating night for Partizan fans, as a season that began with high expectations has turned into a nightmare.
Partizan shot just 45 percent from the field, had fewer assists and rebounds than their opponents, and committed as many as 20 turnovers. With numbers like these, they would struggle even against much weaker teams than Virtus Bologna.
It remains to be seen how, or if, the team will respond in the upcoming game. Zalgiris are a team that Partizan have generally handled well in recent seasons, but at this moment there are very few reasons for optimism.
Head to Head
Zalgiris won the most recent head to head meeting between these teams last season in this arena, 70:66, although the Belgrade side had won the previous six consecutive games.
Verdict
The game against Virtus Bologna exposed all of Partizan’s current problems. Apart from Duane Washington, there are very few players capable of creating and scoring points on their own, and once the ball is taken out of his hands, Partizan’s offense becomes far more predictable.
To make matters worse, Partizan will be without their starting center Tyrique Jones due to injury, which I expect Zalgiris to exploit and secure a much needed win in front of their home fans.
