Anadolu Efes Form & Team News
Pablo Laso had a very difficult task in his EuroLeague debut as Anadolu Efes head coach, facing Zalgiris away in Kaunas, but his team delivered an excellent performance and recorded a convincing 87:64 win.
Without any doubt, it was Efes best game of the season, even though they were still without several key players such as Shane Larkin, Ercan Osmani, and P.J. Dozier.
Coach Laso shuffled the deck at the start of the game and gave opportunities in the starting lineup to players with limited minutes so far this season, such as Rodrigue Beaubois and Cole Swider, and that decision proved to be a great one. They repaid his trust by scoring 13 points in the first quarter, and after the opening ten minutes Efes already held a double digit lead.
Zalgiris responded in the second quarter, but that did not disturb the visitors, who regrouped at halftime and once again pulled away to a 12 point advantage in the third quarter.
They sealed the job in the final period, allowing the home team only 13 points, which was more than enough for a comfortable victory.
In addition to Cole Swider, who dominated with 18 points, double digit scorers also included Vincent Poirier with 14 points in his return from injury, and Jordan Loyd, who scored most of his 12 points in the second half.
Dubai Form & Team News
Dubai played the first game of the EuroLeague double round at home against Maccabi Tel Aviv without fans in the stands, which may have been one of the key factors behind their first loss in the Coca Cola Arena.
It was another high scoring game typical of these two teams this season, in which Maccabi Tel Aviv ultimately handled the situation slightly better.
To be fair, the Israeli club was the better team for most of the game, but credit must also be given to Dubai, who did not give up despite trailing by double digits early in the fourth quarter and fought until the very end, nearly pulling off a comeback win.
Maccabi almost squandered another big lead, something that has happened several times this season, but the savior was their newest signing Iffe Lundberg, who created a clean look for Oshae Brissett five seconds before the buzzer, allowing him to finish with an uncontested dunk.
Dubai point guard McKinley Wright tried for the second game in a row to win it for his team, but this time his three point attempt rattled out.
Wright once again confirmed his excellent form with an almost flawless performance of 26 points, 7 rebounds, and 10 assists. Justin Anderson was also very good with 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Filip Petrusev added 15 points.
Head to Head
This will be only the second game Dubai has played on Turkish soil. In the first one, they recorded a convincing road win against Fenerbahce, 92:69.
Verdict
Judging by the previous game, brighter days are ahead for Anadolu Efes. It is still an early stage of the competition, and there is plenty of time to get involved in the fight for the upper part of the standings.
The team has reacted very well to the coaching change, and I expect even better performances from this club in the coming period. Dubai are a respectable opponent, but on the road they do not show nearly the same level of play as they do in their home arena.
