The start of the Euroleague season was turbulent and shaky for Real Madrid, but in recent weeks they have begun to resemble the team widely considered one of the favorites to reach the Final Four.

After narrow wins over Zalgiris and Hapoel Tel Aviv, Real Madrid also defeated Anadolu Efes on the road in Istanbul last week.

It was a very exciting game with multiple lead changes, but in the end, the deeper rotation of the Spanish champions and the individual quality of their players made the difference.

Mario Hezonja had faced heavy criticism earlier in the season due to poor performances, but in recent games he has reemerged as the team’s main scorer and one of the key reasons for their winning streak.

Against Anadolu Efes, Hezonja scored 22 points in the first three quarters and single-handedly stopped several of Efes’ attempts to build a meaningful lead.

In the fourth quarter, he played only two minutes due to foul trouble, but Real did not miss him as Facundo Campazzo, Gabriel Deck, and Trey Lyles stepped up, with Lyles scoring 7 points in the final period.

Baskonia Form & Team News

A disastrous start to the season with six straight losses did not break Baskonia - instead, it motivated them to work harder and fight back.

They managed to pull themselves out of a very unfavorable situation and are now far from the team that opponents would expect to beat easily.

They currently sit 14th in the standings with a 5-9 record and seem poised to climb further in the coming weeks. Last week, they claimed their fifth consecutive home victory, this time defeating Olimpia Milano 88–78 in Vitoria, where Milano had no real chance.

Baskonia were the better team throughout the entire game, maintaining control and building a lead that reached +22 early in the fourth quarter. They delivered an excellent team performance, outplaying their opponent in nearly every aspect of the game.

As usual, Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot led the scoring with 21 points, while Matteo Spagnolo added 18.

Kobi Simmons scored 11, and Marcus Howard - still finding his rhythm after recovering from injury - finished with 10 points.

In recent games, Baskonia have clearly shown their intention to speed up their style of play as much as possible, a trend even more visible with the return and improved form of Marcus Howard and Kobi Simmons.

I expect a similar approach against Real Madrid, who have shown defensive vulnerabilities multiple times this season. In my opinion, this will be a high-tempo matchup with plenty of points from both sides.
