The JackJumpers will win consecutive games for the first time since Round 3 when they spoil the return of Cairns big man Sam Waardenburg, who plays his first game of the season for the Taipans. 

The line is slim at 2.5 points in favour of the JackJumpers but this is another tough NBL game to call with the effect of Waardenburg a difficult gauge, especially not knowing how many minutes he will have and how strong that ankle is returning from a serious break. 

Consistency from Tasmania also makes this one unforeseeable, however, the Jackies have to be due for a couple of good performances in a row now that they have their lineup stable with 8-9 strong players in their rotation. 

The result will be what it is but a focus on player props will hopefully turn the fortunes around in the NBL tipping this season. The combination of Andrew Andrews assists with Jack McVeigh threes has been a winning concept this season, while Will Magnay’s presence under the rim has lifted and will need to be at its top against Waardenburg when he is on the court.

How quickly can the longest standing Taipan Sam Waardenberg have an effect on Cairns’ season? The Taipans year was turned on its ankle when Waardenburg went down in the preseason but all of the chatter heading into the game against the JackJumpers is about their big man’s return. 

Cairns are at the bottom of the ladder, but are currently still intact with a shot at the postseason if they can go on a run, but it has to happen soon, before they drift out further than the three wins that they are currently back. 

The Taipans had a positive performance after the FIBA break, taking down Illawarra 93-76 in one of their best defensive performances of the season. Cairns got the victory without marquee man Jack McVeigh with Andrew Andrews taking control of the offence and sinking 27 points along with 5 rebounds and 6 assists.

I’m lost for words about Tasmania at the moment, being one of these teams that performs when they feel like and bombs when they don’t. 

After a poor first quarter, where they opened the flood gates to South East Melbourne, conceding 36 points to the 27 they scored, the Jackjumpers locked down after the break, holding the Phoenix to no more than 18 points in each of the following three quarter, winning the match at a 6.5-point underdog by 8 points, 89-81.

It was the Jackies second win in three games after losing 6 straight prior. Scott Roth will now want to see some consistency from his men as they look to strengthen their position in the second half of the season. 

All the JackJumpers focus has been on lifting their offence out of 9th place in scoring, however, maybe Tassie just need to get back to what they do best and play shutdown basketball just as they did against SEM.
