In the NBL25 Round 6 matchup, Cairns Taipans are poised to break their current losing streak with a victory over Perth Wildcats in the Ignite Cup. Despite recent losses, Cairns showed improvement in their last game and are expected to capitalize on Perth's inconsistencies. The Wildcats struggled in their recent outings due to poor shooting and turnovers, issues that Cairns will look to exploit. Expect a close contest, but with Cairns emerging victorious. Key players to watch include Andrew Andrews and Admiral Schofield.

The Taipans are yet to participate in an Ignite Cup match while the Wildcats lost their first one to the Brisbane Bullets last week.

Many experts (including this one) expected the Taipans to suffer even more with Jack McVeigh out of the lineup against Adelaide last week. But they put on a solid showing, they didn’t win the game but still posted their highest total of the season and kept everyone else not named Bryce Cotton to just 38 pts.

Perth had fooled people into thinking they were good with some early season wins but under the hood, things are still not right. Kristian Doolittle has been quiet and if not for superhuman games from Dylan Windler and Jo Lual-Acuil, this team could be in a deeper hole right now. They are the worst 3pt shooting team in the league but still shoot the 4th highest number of deep shots. They are 6th in opponent points and 8th in opponent rebounding while giving up over 13 turnovers per game.

Don’t get me wrong, Cairns are also trash. But they have motivation in trying to break this losing streak on their home court and Perth don’t have a lot of confidence right now. These teams played on October 2nd in Cairns with Perth winning by only 3pts despite shooting 58% from the field.

Expect another tight contest but this time with Cairns getting the chocolates with the Wildcats inconsistencies showing through. Taipans on the moneyline, Andrew Andrews points ladders, 20+ or 25+ and Admiral Schofield rebounds ladders 5+ and 7+.

  • Perth are averaging 13.2 Turnovers per match and shot at 58% in their 3pt win over Cairns on October 2nd.
  • The Taipans scored their highest season total last weekend in a loss to the 36ers.
  • Andrew Andrews is averaging 14.7 pts per game but has scored 20+ in 2 of his last 3 with a season high of 23 vs Adelaide.
  • Admiral Schofield is averaging 5.3 rebounds per game but has had 6+ in 4 of his 7 games, including 9 last start.

Cairns Taipans Form & Team News

Cairns took another L over the weekend and are now on a 4 game losing streak heading into this matchup.

The 91-86 loss to the 36ers was not as bad as their previous outing against the same club and it was their highest score of the season, despite not having Jack McVeigh in the lineup. Andrew Andrews topscored with 23 while also dishing out 7 dimes. Admiral Schofield and Kyrin Galloway each had 9 boards. Marcus Lee was the only bench player to post points with 14 and 6.

Defensively though, they allowed Bryce Cotton to score 53 at over 50% shooting. With other players on the team struggling with getting the ball in the net, Cairns should have taken better advantage of the situation. They still rank last in scoring and 7th in opposition points.

Perth Wildcats Form & Team News

Perth were found out in both of their Round 5 matchups last week. First up was a 110-93 loss in the Ignite Cup matchup to Brisbane before going down 94-72 on the road in Sydney on Sunday.

Inconsistent shooting once again hampered Perth, hitting just 29.3% from distance and 34.3% overall from the floor. Sydney shot 9 more shots and 21 more threes in the matchup which Perth led 22-15 at quarter time.

The Wildcats were careless with the ball, giving up 17 turnovers while forcing just 6 themselves. Jo Lual-Acuil top scored again while Jaron Rillie was solid off the bench but against the scoring power of Sydney they were not able to stay in the game defensively.
