The Oklahoma City Thunder will host the San Antonio Spurs for the third time in two weeks, seeking redemption after consecutive defeats. The Thunder, once considered a powerhouse in the league, have recently seen a dip in form, losing key games to the Spurs. Despite standout performances from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the Spurs outshone them, demonstrating their rising potential even without star Victor Wembanyama at full capacity. With the Spurs leveraging contributions from all players, the Thunder must deliver a compelling defensive performance to avoid further setbacks.

Oklahoma City Thunder Form & Team News

Just ten days ago, it looked as if OKC were heading toward a historic season and might even challenge the Warriors’ all-time wins record, but it is now increasingly clear that this will not happen.

The Thunder have fallen into a slight slump, losing three of their last five games, but they still hold the top spot in the Western Conference with a 26-4 record. Two of their four losses this season have come against the rising San Antonio Spurs, both within a span of just ten days.

First, the Spurs were victorious in Las Vegas in the NBA Cup semifinal. That game was marked by intense competition, late-game drama, and OKC blowing a 16-point lead.

Thunder fought back in the fourth quarter, but every time Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and company tried to swing the game in their favor, the Spurs had an answer.

That the Spurs would be a serious test for OKC this season was further confirmed the previous night at the Frost Bank Center, where the home team completely outclassed their opponent and handed the Thunder a defeat they have not experienced in recent years.

Coach Mark Daigneault’s team looked utterly powerless despite Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scoring 33 points on excellent shooting efficiency. Spurs also forced OKC into 15 turnovers.

Final score read 130-110, and the Thunder left the court with their heads down. Fortunately for them, a chance for revenge comes quickly.

San Antonio Spurs Form & Team News

It was clear even before the start of the season that the Spurs had fantastic potential and were a rising force for the years ahead, but few expected them to be this good already.

The results of recent weeks are even more impressive considering that the team’s star, Victor Wembanyama, has been on a minutes restriction since returning from injury, playing just over 20 minutes per game.

This has allowed other players to step up and showcase their talent, and as a result, the Spurs currently sit second in the Western Conference with a 22-7 record, having also lost the NBA Cup final to the New York Knicks.

On Wednesday, they showcased their full strength against the reigning champions, who played at full capacity with Isaiah Hartenstein back at center. That did not stop the Spurs, who from the opening tip showed no respect for the champions, played their game, and made it clear they fear no one.

The first half was evenly contested, but the second half belonged entirely to San Antonio. After halftime, the Spurs poured in 72 points, leaving the league’s best defense without any answers to their aggression.

Veteran Harrison Barnes and Keldon Johnson were lethal in the first half, scoring from all areas of the floor, while Stephon Castle took over in the second half, scoring 16 of his 24 points.

Head-to-Head

Last season, the Thunder defeated the Spurs in three of their four meetings. This season, however, San Antonio have already beaten the champions twice, including once in the NBA Cup semifinal.

Verdict

This will undoubtedly be the most anticipated game of Christmas night. The young Spurs team has thrown down the gauntlet to the Thunder, and now a response from the champions is expected.

This is far too talented and proud a team to simply accept their previous disastrous loss against this opponent. I expect to see maximum effort and the trademark defense that brought them the title last season.
