Italy and Slovenia will play a derby match in the Round of 16 at EuroBasket.

Based on their performances in the tournament, Italy has the role of slight favorite, but Slovenia has on their side one of the best players in the world, Luka Doncic.

After the opening loss to Greece at the start of the tournament where they looked quite poor, Italy raised their level and finished the group stage with four consecutive victories.

That was enough for them to secure second place in the group behind Greece and ahead of Bosnia & Herzegovina and Georgia.

In their last game they had what was basically a tougher training session against hosts Cyprus, winning 89:54.

Coach Pozzecco used that game to rest his key players, evenly distribute minutes, and give a chance to some players who had not played much in the previous matches.

Due to an injury sustained in the game against Spain, Salio Niang missed the match with Cyprus, but the good news is that the injury is not serious and he should play against Slovenia.

As one of the best defenders in the team, his presence on the court will be of great importance in guarding Luka Doncic and controlling the boards.

Slovenia had a rocky road in the group stage.

After two opening losses to Poland and France, in which they conceded a total of 208 points, they were under huge pressure in the following games.

Despite that, they managed to drastically raise their level of play and with three consecutive wins against Belgium, Iceland, and Israel, secured a place in the Round of 16 as the third-placed team in the group.

The last match against Israel was probably their best in the tournament.

From the very start they controlled the game and the score, and deservedly won led by a fantastic individual performance from Luka Doncic.

The LA Lakers star finished the match with 37 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists, despite playing the last 15 minutes of the game with 4 fouls.

Up to this match, Italy and Slovenia have met three times at EuroBasket. Interestingly, Slovenia won all three of the previous meetings.

Verdict

Italy v Slovenia

Italy may be unconvincing in the knockout stage, yet I believe the advantage is on their side in this matchup.

They have plenty of size and good defenders they can throw at Luka Doncic, slow him down, and limit his production.

On the other hand, Slovenia will have a lot of defensive problems, especially protecting the paint, and I expect them to suffer heavily in that area.
