Graeme Hinton has been appointed the new CEO of Racing NSW, succeeding Peter V’landys AM following his 22-year tenure in the role.

The Australian Turf Club welcomed Hinton’s appointment on Monday, describing it as a strong outcome for the NSW thoroughbred racing industry.

Hinton has been with Racing NSW since 2012 and has served as Chief Operating Officer since 2016. He stepped into the role of Acting Chief Executive in July while V’landys took long service leave.

He will formally become Racing NSW CEO on December 1, the day after V’landys’ current contract expires.

Australian Turf Club CEO Steve McMahon said Hinton brought extensive industry experience and a strong understanding of wagering and racing.

“Graeme Hinton’s appointment as CEO of Racing NSW is an outstanding outcome for the Thoroughbred racing industry in this state and for Australian racing,” McMahon said in an Australian Turf Club media release.

“Graeme brings exceptional experience, strong commercial acumen and a deep understanding of wagering, punters and the Thoroughbred racing landscape.

“Having worked with Graeme, I know first-hand the qualities he will bring to the role to help continue to grow NSW as a leading and world-class jurisdiction.”

Hinton’s appointment comes four days after Racing NSW announced V’landys would leave the organisation at the end of his contract on November 30.

V’landys has served as Racing NSW chief executive since 2004, overseeing a period of significant growth in wagering revenue, prizemoney and funding for the NSW thoroughbred industry.

McMahon said the Australian Turf Club would continue to work closely with Hinton as Racing NSW enters its next phase.

“I look forward to continuing to work closely with him in my role as CEO of the Australian Turf Club to build an even stronger future for NSW racing and deliver great outcomes for participants, clubs and racing fans right across the state.”

The ATC also paid tribute to V’landys following confirmation of his departure last week, highlighting his contribution to Sydney and NSW racing during more than two decades in the role.
