Valencia Form & Team News
So far, Valencia have been the team that has exceeded expectations the most compared to preseason predictions in the EuroLeague.
After 18 games played, they share second place in the standings with a 12-8 record. At home, they have been almost perfect, with their only defeat coming against current leaders Hapoel Tel Aviv in a game played behind closed doors.
In their most recent game, Valencia defeated Baskonia 91-81, marking their 12th consecutive win at Roig Arena across all competitions. Head coach Pedro Martínez’s team once again demonstrated excellent ball movement and team play, shooting an impressive 46% from three-point range (13/28) and scoring 91 points despite committing as many as 17 turnovers.
Valencia led for almost the entire game, building a maximum 21-point advantage midway through the second quarter, and then calmly controlled the contest until the final buzzer. Once again, minutes were distributed almost perfectly, with every player in the game-day roster getting an opportunity to contribute.
Center Matt Costello was the leading scorer with 18 points and 6 rebounds, while Jean Montero and Kameron Taylor provided strong support with 16 points each. Brancou Badio (12 points) and Omari Moore (11 points) also reached double figures.
Partizan Form & Team News
Partizan find themselves in a nightmare with no clear way out in sight. After losses to Virtus Bologna and one of the heaviest defeats in their history against Žalgiris, they then suffered another home debacle against Maccabi Tel Aviv, losing 112-87.
After the first quarter of that game, in which Partizan led by as many as 11 points, it seemed the black-and-whites might finally produce a solid performance and end their unpleasant run. However, those hopes quickly evaporated as, once again, Partizan’s game completely collapsed over a short stretch of time.
They scored just 12 points in the second quarter, which Maccabi’s potent offense punished by taking a comfortable 15-point lead into halftime.
The third quarter was even more one-sided, as Maccabi won it 34-16, leaving Partizan fans angry and frustrated as they once again filed out of Belgrade Arena - this time during the head-coaching debut of Joan Peñarroya.
The game also marked the debut of newly acquired point guard Cam Payne, who recorded a respectable 15 points and 6 assists, but it was little consolation in yet another heavy defeat. He was also Partizan’s leading scorer on the night.
Duane Washington had a disastrous performance, shooting just 3-of-13 from the field, only days after setting a new ABA League record with 48 points against Krka.
Head-to-Head
After two seasons, Partizan will once again visit Valencia. In their last meeting in Valencia, the black-and-whites claimed a 72-67 victory. Interestingly, not a single Partizan player from that game remains on the current roster.
Verdict
Joan Peñarroya has been in charge of Partizan for just a week, and he will need more time to implement his ideas, along with some inevitable roster adjustments. Until then, Partizan will be one of the more desirable opponents in the EuroLeague, as their defense looks very poor.
This is shaping up to be a very unpleasant experience for the visitors against the best offense in the league.
