After an unsuccessful premiere for both clubs, Maccabi and Paris will have the chance two days later to record their first win of the season.

Maccabi will enter the game as a slight favorite, but Paris will, as always, play without any respect for the opponent.

Maccabi Tel Aviv put up a strong fight on Wednesday away against Anadolu Efes, but in the end they had to surrender as they lost 85:78.

Overall, Maccabi played a solid game, but one of the main reasons for their loss was very poor three point shooting.

The most decorated Israeli club missed as many as 20 shots from behind the arc (7/27), and it did not help that they also had 8 rebounds fewer than the opponent.

Another big reason for the defeat was the lack of contribution from Lonnie Walker, who was projected as the team’s main scorer.

The Euroleague returnee made only one shot out of six attempts, and had to leave the court early due to an ankle injury. He is questionable for the upcoming match and a decision on his participation will be made on game day.

With a completely renovated team, Paris started the new Euroleague season in Istanbul, where they suffered a heavy defeat against the reigning champions Fenerbahce, 93:76.

For a full 28 minutes Paris was even with the home team, but then came a huge drop in their play, which Fener quickly used to build a double digit lead in just 2 minutes.

Considering the large number of new players, such collapses are somewhat expected, but most Euroleague teams will know how to take advantage of that.

Nadir Hifi was the best scorer for his team, though with high shot consumption (7/17 fg), and Justin Robinson had a solid Euroleague debut with 17 points.

Those two were also the only double digit scorers for Paris, which shows the limited number of effective players Francesco Tabellini had available on Wednesday.

In two duels last season, Paris won both times. In Paris it was 93:81, while on Maccabi’s home court the result was 96:83.

Verdict

Maccabi Tel Aviv v Paris

I had some skepticism about how Maccabi would look this season, but I have to admit they positively surprised me in the game against Efes.

They look tougher and more defensively solid than last season, when they had one of the weaker defenses in the league.

The potential absence of Walker will be a problem, but even without him they have a strong enough team to defeat Paris, which is still searching for its identity with so many new players.
