ASVEL vs Baskonia Preview

After losses in the first round of the Euroleague, ASVEL and Baskonia will have a chance to bounce back and register their first victory in the competition.

In general, ASVEL is considered by many this season to be one of the weakest participants in the Euroleague, if not the weakest.

Last season was not successful either, as they finished in the lower half of the table, and the impression is that this season they are much weaker.

They will be looking for most of their wins at home. In the first round, however, they failed to defeat Valencia, who triumphed in the LDLC Arena with a score of 80:77. Now they will face another Spanish team.

The loss came mainly due to poor three point shooting (8/26), as well as being completely outplayed on the boards compared to their opponent (35:50), something unthinkable in previous seasons when they had much more physical teams.

Veteran Nando De Colo tried everything to carry his team, but his 17 points were not enough as he had little help. Besides him, only Glynn Watson with 14 points and Bastien Vautier with 12 points managed to score in double figures.

Baskonia Form & Team News

Baskonia is also seen as one of the teams expected to finish near the bottom of the Euroleague table. Few believe they will contend for the play in spots.

Despite that, they played a very good game against heavy favorites Olympiacos, but eventually lost 102:96.

They even had a one point lead a few minutes before the end, but in those moments the individual quality of their opponent, along with the inexperience of some Baskonia players making their Euroleague debuts, proved decisive.

The experienced players carried the team. Luwawu Cabarrot was the top scorer with 23 points, Marcus Howard added 12, while Trent Forrest had an excellent double double with 14 points and 10 assists. Among the newcomers, former NBA player Hamidou Diallo stood out with 15 points.

Head to head

Last season these two teams split their games. ASVEL won the first meeting at home 76:69, but Baskonia responded later in the season with a convincing 111:75 victory.

Verdict

Asvel Lyon-Villeurbanne v Baskonia

This will be one of the rare games this Euroleague season where ASVEL will enter as the favorite.

I am doubtful about their true potential, but Baskonia is certainly a team they can compete with. They should not get into a shootout because the visitors have much more scoring power. Instead, I expect them to slow the game down and impose aggressive defense.

The under on points looks like the smartest choice.
