As the runner-up team of Group B, Lithuania secured a place in the Round of 16 and set up a clash against Latvia.

In the game against Finland, they lost their probably best player of the tournament Rokas Jokubaitis due to injury, which significantly reduced their chances of reaching the final stages.

Nevertheless, there is no doubt that the Lithuanians will give their best to overcome the first obstacle in the knockout phase.

With Jokubaitis out, a bigger role was taken by Braunschweig guard Arnas Velicka, who delivered 7 assists in the match against Sweden, while an even bigger role in offense went to veteran Jonas Valanciunas, around whom the attack will be built even more.

The situation is not ideal, but Lithuania is too proud and too experienced a team to give up in advance.

The hosts had very questionable performances at the start of the tournament. A heavy defeat against Turkey, a tough win against Estonia and a loss to Serbia worried their fans, but Latvia managed to bounce back with victories against Portugal and Czechia.

There is some concern regarding the health of starting point guard Arturs Zagars, who got injured in the match against Portugal.

He returned to the lineup for the game against Czechia, but it was clear that he was not at 100% of his capacity.

Latvia had several days to recover one of their most important players, on whom the team’s success will largely depend.

The last time they reached the EuroBasket quarterfinals was back in 2017, and this is an ideal opportunity to at least repeat that result.

The last official meeting between these two national teams took place two years ago in the battle for 5th place at the World Cup, where Latvia convincingly won 98:63.

Verdict

Lithuania v Latvia

This will be a trench battle between two extremely physical teams. I expect to see a lot of half-court offenses and not much of a shooting spectacle, since both teams have been quite poor from three-point range in this tournament.

Latvia is shooting 35% from deep, while Lithuania is at a miserable 26%. A key matchup to watch will be Porzingis vs Valanciunas, as much of both teams’ performance will depend on them.
