Melbourne United vs Brisbane Bullets NBL25 Round 18 Expert Tips

Melbourne continue their home stand at Red Energy Arena in Bendigo and are expected to grab a win this time around against a luckless Brisbane Bullets.

With the Australian Open in full swing at John Cain Arena, Melbourne United will once again play out of Red Energy Arena in Bendigo. They lost their previous matchup here on the 7th January to the Cairns Taipans 93-92, part of a 3 game losing streak that was snapped in Perth at the weekend with a 79-77 win over Tassie.

Brisbane have had a season to forget and are in the midst of a 6 game losing streak and 7 game losing streak on the road, the most recent road victory being against Tasmania on November 8th. They rank near the bottom in almost every attacking stat and are bottom half of the league in almost every defensive stat.

United have been in the trenches, poor form since the FIBA break has translated into them tumbling down the standings and in the rankings across the board. But signs of hope are starting to show with changes in rotations giving them the extra spark to get over the JackJumpers at Hoops Fest.

These two teams could not be more different fundamentally. Melbourne are much more structured, have better coaching, a better roster and have a winning pedigree. If not for their poor recent form the line could have been closer to 20 pts.

Expect Melbourne to win, stretching their legs on the scoring end for the first time in a while. Take them to cover the -10.5 line as the home favourite, exceed their team total of 94.5 pts and Jesse Edwards to clear 15 pts.

  • Melbourne have won 16 of the last 17 matchups with Brisbane.
  • United have exceeded this total in 5 of the last 6 games against the Bullets. Brisbane allow 95.1 pts to opponents this season.
  • Jesse Edwards has had at least 8 FG attempts in 7 of his last 10 games, all inside.
  • Brisbane give up the highest 2PT% to opponents in the league at 56.9%.

Melbourne United Form & Team News

Melbourne managed to stem the bleeding at Hoops Fest, snapping a 3 game losing streak with a 79-77 win over the Tasmania JackJumpers. The game was always going to be a grind and in the previous 2 matchups this season Tassie had come out on top.

But a shake up to the rotations with Milton Doyle coming off the bench paid dividends for Dean Vickerman despite 2 of his starters not scoring a single point. Melbourne’s bench outscored Tasmania’s 35-13 while the team also dominated the perimeter shooting 34.5% and restricting their opponent to just 20% from 3pt range.

Jesse Edwards finished the game with 21 pts, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks leading everyone on court. It is possible we are starting to see the resurgence of Melbourne.

Brisbane Bullets Form & Team News

The Bullets sunk to their 6th straight loss in Perth at the weekend and continue to anchor the league on the bottom of the ladder with a 6-20 record. They are in danger of recording their worst ever win percentage needing to win 4 of their 7 remaining games to exceed the .286 they recorded with a 8-20 season in 2022/23 (fewer games played).

The 95-80 loss to Sydney saw Brisbane lose essentially all major stat categories which mirrors their rankings on the season. The Bullets are 9th or 10th in average points, rebounds, 3pt% and turnovers on the offensive end while being 5th or worst in opposition points, rebounds, FG% and Turnovers.

The Bullets have a long way to go to find themselves in this league. Any win from here on out is likely to be emotional or the opposition having a cold night.
