Greece vs Turkey Preview

Greece and Turkey will fight for their first EuroBasket final appearance in 20 and 24 years, respectively.

Giannis Antetokounmpo wants his first medal with Greece in his career, but he will face undefeated Turkey with the fantastic Alperen Sengun.

With a routine 87:76 win over Lithuania, Greece reached the EuroBasket semifinal for the first time in 18 years, since the tournament in Spain. Back then, they finished fourth after losing to Lithuania in the bronze medal match.

Despite a fantastic performance by Jonas Valanciunas with 24 points and 15 rebounds, Greece fairly easily handled Lithuania thanks to excellent defensive work on the rest of the team.

In offense, as always, the biggest influence came from Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, who dominated inside the paint and finished the game with 29 points.

Unlike him, Kostas Sloukas and especially Tyler Dorsey were fairly quiet this time, but Vasileios Toliopoulos emerged as the hero off the bench, scoring 17 points in just 16 minutes on the floor.

In the EuroBasket quarterfinal against Poland, Turkey had little trouble and secured a deserved 91:78 victory to book their place in the medal round.

The key was the second quarter, which Turkey won 27:13, and their biggest lead came late in the third quarter at plus 22.

Houston Rockets star center Alperen Sengun delivered another historic game, becoming the youngest player in EuroBasket history to record a triple-double.

He finished with 19 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists, while six other Turkish players also scored in double digits, showing just how deep their roster is.

The top scorers among them were Sehmus Hazer and Shane Larkin with 13 points each.

A major concern for Turkey, however, is the injury of Cedi Osman, who was unable to play in the closing stages, but according to the latest reports, he should be in the lineup for the semifinal.

The last time these two national teams met at EuroBasket was 12 years ago in the group stage, when Greece won convincingly 84:61.

Verdict

There will be many interesting tactical duels in this match. Although Giannis will likely start at the center position again, I do not expect him to be tasked with defending Alperen Sengun, in order to reduce the risk of foul trouble.

That should open plenty of opportunities in the low post for the talented center, who will be able to create plays both for himself and for the rest of the team.

I expect a high-tempo game with a lot of points in the paint, and with decent three-point shooting percentages, this points line should not be a problem.
