Germany extended their perfect run with a 99:91 win over Slovenia in the quarterfinals. Despite Luka Dončić dropping 39 points, Germany controlled the game with balanced scoring and tight execution. Franz Wagner finished with 23 points, Dennis Schröder added 20 and 7 assists, and the team committed just six turnovers.

What sets Germany apart is their depth. Seven players are averaging over 8.5 points per game. Along with the leadership of Schröder and the all-around play of Wagner, the team benefits from reliable role players like Johannes Thiemann, Oscar Da Silva and Isaac Bonga. Markkanen remains Finland’s most important player, but their tournament success has been tied to role players stepping up. Sasu Salin, Edon Maxhuni, Jantunen, Little, have each had moments where they changed games with hustle or outside shooting. Still, the team lives and dies by Markkanen’s rhythm.

Their biggest concern is consistency. Against stronger teams, Finland has had long scoring droughts and lapses on defense. In their group-stage loss to Germany, they were overwhelmed physically and struggled to generate quality looks. Markkanen was ineffective, and the team never recovered.

For Finland to have a real chance, they’ll need their best game of the tournament, both from their NBA star and their supporting cast. Otherwise, Germany’s depth and structure will be too much to overcome.

Germany have already proven they can dominate Finland, and with their current form, it’s hard to see them slipping. Their team depth, poise under pressure, and physical advantage should carry them through again.

Finland’s magical run ends here unless Markkanen produces a monster performance and the bench repeats its quarterfinal showing, both unlikely against Germany’s defense.
