Greece and Finland will battle for the EuroBasket bronze medal after suffering heavy defeats in their respective semifinals. Greece struggled against Turkey, unable to overcome their opponent’s aggressive defense, particularly against Giannis Antetokounmpo, while Finland fell short against champions Germany. Key players, like Giannis and Lauri Markkanen, must step up for their teams. History slightly favors Finland, but Greece’s stronger roster and motivated coach could lead them to break their 16-year medal drought. Key bets: Greece -4.5 Asian handicap; Giannis 30.5+ points.

Greece Form & Team News

With high expectations, Greece entered the semifinal against Turkey. In the end, they suffered a huge disappointment and a clash with reality.

Turkey literally humiliated them with a 94:68 victory.

From the very beginning it was clear that the opponent was much better prepared and knew exactly how to organize their defense to stop Giannis Antetokounmpo.

After ten minutes, Greece was already in double-digit deficit, and by halftime it had grown to minus 18.
When they failed to reduce the gap at the start of the second half, it was obvious they had no chance and could already turn their focus to the bronze medal match.

Giannis was completely shut down, finishing with only 12 points on 6 of 13 shooting, while the rest of the team also could not cope with the ultra-aggressive Turkish defense.

Coach Spanoulis now must find a way to lift his players in the hope of winning the first EuroBasket medal in 16 years.

Finland Form & Team News

Finland gave their all in the semifinal against Germany, but at this moment they simply could not match the reigning world champions.

In the middle of the first quarter Finland had a maximum seven-point lead, but then Germany took control.

By the end of the quarter they went on a 19:8 run and never looked back.

Once again Lauri Markkanen did not have his usual impact, as he struggled to find good shooting positions due to Germany’s aggressive defense.

He hit only 6 of his 17 attempts, and while he was on the court for 27 minutes, Germany outscored Finland by 24 points.

For the bronze medal game, Finland will need a much better performance from their star if they want to win the first medal in their history.

Head to head

These two teams have played three times at EuroBasket so far. Finland leads 2:1 in wins, including the most recent meeting in 2017.

Verdict

It will be much easier for Greece to play this match compared to the semifinal against Turkey.

Finland is not nearly as aggressive on defense and does not have the size or quality defenders to slow down Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Vassilis Spanoulis is known as a strong motivator, and with one fantastic performance from the Milwaukee Bucks superstar, Greece should finally win the long-awaited medal.
