Stern Idol Breaks Modern Record in 75kg Brierly Win
Stern Idol delivered an extraordinary performance by winning the 2026 Brierly Steeplechase at Warrnambool under a hefty 75kg, surpassing his previous 2024 record. The front-runner led most of the way, eventually defeating Hit The Road Jack by 4.5 lengths, despite conceding 10kg to the runner-up. The victory marks the sixth Brierly for trainer Ciaron Maher and the fifth for jockey Steven Pateman. While not eclipsing Agricolo’s all-time 1927 record, Stern Idol’s achievement stands out in modern jumps racing history.

Stern Idol has produced one of the most significant weight-carrying performances in modern Australian jumps racing, claiming the 2026 Brierly Steeplechase under 75kg at Warrnambool.
The noted front runner briefly lost the lead after the Tozer Road Double before quickly taking back the running, and from that point never relinquished control.
He travelled strongly and reasserted his superiority late, going on to defeat Hit The Road Jack by 4.5 lengths and conceding 10kg to the runner-up.
The win delivered a sixth Brierly Steeplechase for Ciaron Maher and a fifth for Steven Pateman, further cementing their dominance at Warrnambool.
Maher and Pateman had earlier opened the famous Warrnambool Carnival in style, with favourite Ongatiti taking out the first race by 10 lengths.
The son of Raven's Pass extended his own benchmark set in 2024 when successful with 73kg, lifting the modern-era weight-carrying record to a new level.
Tuesday's victory continued a standout record that now reads 18 wins, including 16 victories over the jumps, with multiple Brierly Steeplechase triumphs among his feature successes.
While falling short of the all-time record of 79.5kg set by Agricolo in 1927, the performance still ranks among the most notable weight-carrying efforts in the race’s history.
