Despite having more modest financial resources compared to most teams in the competition, Virtus Bologna have played and looked very good in the EuroLeague so far.

The Italian powerhouse have recorded 8 wins in 17 games, with the majority of those victories coming on their home floor, which has proven to be a true nightmare for visiting teams.

Last week, during a double EuroLeague round, Virtus had two away games in Belgrade and came away with a split record. After a convincing 86-68 win over Partizan, Virtus nearly secured a second victory, but Crvena Zvezda managed to defend their home court in a dramatic finish and defeat Duško Ivanović’s team.

That game was marked by an intense battle, strong shooting percentages, frequent lead changes, and ultimately a missed three-pointer by Carsen Edwards that heartbreakingly rimmed out for Virtus.

Carsen Edwards was the game’s leading scorer with 29 points, hitting shots from all areas of the floor and causing damage with both powerful drives to the basket and perimeter shooting. Unfortunately for Virtus, he was unable to cap it off as the outright hero.

Alongside him, Luca Vildoza (16 points, 9 assists), Derrick Alston Jr. (13 points), and Karim Jallow (11 points) also delivered solid performances.

So far, Olympiacos have not lived up to their reputation and status as one of the favorites to win the EuroLeague title.

After 16 games, the Greek champions have a modest record of 9 wins, and dissatisfaction among fans and within the club is becoming increasingly vocal. There is even speculation that head coach Georgios Bartzokas could be under pressure following the team’s poor results in recent weeks, although no concrete decisions have been made yet.

In their most recent outing, Olympiacos defeated bottom-placed ASVEL 107-84, briefly extinguishing the fire and calming tensions around the club.

There is little need to overanalyze that game, as Olympiacos are simply several classes above the French side at the moment.

From the opening tip, the team from Piraeus played aggressively and made it clear that ASVEL had little hope. After the first 10 minutes, the home side already held a double-digit lead, which they maintained through halftime. From the very start of the second half, the advantage continued to grow, reaching a maximum of +25.

The entire Olympiacos squad was in good rhythm, with six players finishing the game in double figures.

Tyler Dorsey led the way with 22 points, Evan Fournier added 21, while former EuroLeague MVP Sasha Vezenkov finished with 17 points.

Since Virtus Bologna returned to the EuroLeague three years ago, these two clubs have met six times, with Olympiacos holding a clear edge with five wins. In their most recent meeting, Olympiacos were dominant in Bologna, winning 92-70.

So far this season, only Hapoel Tel Aviv have managed to win in Bologna, while Real Madrid, Monaco, Panathinaikos, Anadolu Efes, and many others have fallen there.

Whether playing at the Segafredo Arena or the legendary PalaDozza, Virtus Bologna are far more comfortable on their home court than on the road, where they consistently raise their level of play in front of their fans.

Even for the Greek champions, this will not be a pleasant place to play.
