Even though they lost their coach and most of their key players during the summer, Paris continues to impress fans across Europe this season.
In the previous round, they gave Virtus Bologna a basketball lesson, completely dominating the game.
With that win, Paris improved their record to two wins and one loss, moving up to 8th place in the Euroleague standings.
Their deadly scorer Nadir Hifi once again led the team with 21 points, further strengthening his early candidacy for the league’s top scorer.
Veteran Amath M'baye was also excellent with 12 points, while Dalton Hommes and Derek Willis made important contributions.
The team’s energy level was once again sky-high, allowing them to win relatively comfortably despite poor shooting percentages from the field and a terrible performance from the free-throw line (14/27).
Baskonia Form & Team News
After three rounds, Baskonia remains the only Euroleague team without a win.
However, despite the record, there are reasons for optimism. Two of their losses came against title contenders Olympiacos and Panathinaikos, both in close finishes. That was especially true in their last game, where they lost to Panathinaikos on a buzzer-beater by Kendrick Nunn.
There’s no time to dwell on that, as another double week in the Euroleague lies ahead.
A huge confidence boost came from their domestic league win over Real Madrid last weekend.
Just like against Panathinaikos, Baskonia came back from a big deficit, overcoming a 19-point gap to win the game.
Point guard Trent Forrest had one of the best games of his career, rightfully earning the MVP award.
He finished with 26 points and 7 rebounds, remarkably hitting all 19 of his free throws.
French international Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot also confirmed his strong early-season form, adding 22 points in the victory.
Head to Head
Last season, both teams won one game each in their head-to-head matchups. In Paris, the home side prevailed in a very close and low-scoring battle, 67–65.
Verdict
Based on what we have seen so far, Paris is not an easy place to play or to expect an easy win.
They have shown they can win even with poor shooting percentages thanks to their high energy and fighting spirit. However, Baskonia also has its strengths, particularly a potent offense that is working very well at the moment.
The visitors should remain competitive in this matchup, and I believe they can at least cover the handicap.
