Olympiacos Form & Team News

Olympiacos is coming off a very successful 10-day stretch. After a tough loss to Real Madrid, they bounced back with three consecutive victories across both competitions.

Their EuroLeague win against debutants Dubai last week was rather routine. Olympiacos controlled the game and the scoreline from start to finish, never allowing their opponent to seriously threaten.

As so often before, Sasha Vezenkov led the way with a strong double-double performance: 25 points and 11 rebounds. He was supported by Tyler Dorsey, Nikola Milutinov, and Saben Lee, who also scored in double digits.

Two days later, Olympiacos claimed a crucial win in the first derby of the season against their arch-rivals Panathinaikos. It was a tough, physical game, where the Reds found better solutions in the final minutes and once again rode the hot hand of Vezenkov to secure a big win.

That victory should provide a big confidence boost heading into upcoming EuroLeague challenges.

Anadolu Efes Form & Team News

Anadolu Efes started their EuroLeague campaign modestly, winning just one of their first three games. This was somewhat expected, as the team underwent major changes during the summer, a new coach, new key players, and a new system.

It will take time for things to click, but there’s no doubt this squad has the quality and potential to be competitive.

In the previous round, they suffered a 93–87 loss in Belgrade to Partizan. It was a high-level game where Efes found themselves trailing for most of the match but still managed to stay within striking distance.

However, they lacked composure in the final moments when closing in on a one-possession game. Poor shot selection at key times allowed the home side to pull away.

Coach Igor Kokoskov is currently relying heavily on his core group, but it’s clear that the rotation needs to expand. Fresh options off the bench are necessary to ease the burden on his main players.

So far, the starting five of Larkin, Osmani, Weiler-Babb, Cordinier, and Loyd has performed well, but the team needs more contributions from the rest of the roster to raise their overall level of play.

Head to Head

Last season, these two rivals played two fantastic games — both won by the home team. Efes triumphed in Istanbul 91–89, while Olympiacos got their revenge in Piraeus with a 92–89 win.

Verdict

Due to current form and home-court advantage, Olympiacos enters the game as the favorite. However, they’re likely to face a serious challenge from Efes.

Efes has not struggled offensively so far, and they certainly have the weapons to challenge the hosts on that end. The real test will be on defense, where improvements are necessary. The potential is there, as they have some strong and physical defenders in the lineup.

I expect a close game, something similar to last season’s encounters.
